About the Role

Under general supervision, this position performs general maintenance, groundskeeping, and custodial work in the assigned functional area. Employees in this classification are responsible for accomplishing a daily routine of general and preventive facilities maintenance and repair tasks to provide safe, attractive, comfortable, clean, and efficient public buildings, roadways, and grounds.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the cleanliness and upkeep of designated female restrooms and locker rooms within the facility.
  • Performs custodial tasks, e.g., emptying and cleaning waste receptacles; washing windows; dusting and polishing furniture; cleaning vents, air filters, fans, walls; changing light bulbs.
  • Utilizes appropriate chemicals and cleaners safely and effectively to ensure employee and public safety.
  • Performs a variety of grounds maintenance tasks, e.g., edging, mowing, trimming, waste and litter removal, fertilizing, laying sod, raking, spreading seed, planting foliage and shrubbery, aerating sports fields, lawns, and soils, trimming and maintaining landscape.
  • Drags and spikes clay infields (when/where appropriate).
  • Operates various lawn care equipment, e.g., manual and riding lawn mowers, sports turf mowers, sand pros and tractors, sod cutters, trucks, weed-eaters, trimmers, edgers, blowers.
  • Utilizes fertilizers, fungicides, herbicides, insecticides, and pest control chemicals according to prescribed safety labels.
  • Operates and maintains irrigation and drainage systems.
  • Uses a wide variety of manual, gas, and electric-powered hand tools, e.g., hammer, shovel, rake, screwdrivers, wrenches, digging bar, chainsaw, chemical sprayer, leaf blowers, weed eaters, hedge trimmers, edgers.
  • Responds to emergency situations to confine, resolve, or prevent injurious or otherwise hazardous conditions, e.g., fallen debris, spills, broken windows, broken locks.
  • Performs minor maintenance and repairs on facilities, structures, equipment, sidewalks, drainage, and other County property in skilled and semi-skilled disciplines, e.g., plumbing, masonry, carpentry, flooring, irrigation, electrical.
  • Participates in work-site safety set-up, e.g., preps work areas; sets barricades and cones; conducts traffic control in accordance with uniform work zone safety standards; flags traffic.
  • Participates in the set-up and removal of tables, chairs, stages, etc., for daily meetings and classes.
  • Cleans equipment and tools after use and maintains cleanliness and order in storage areas.
  • Organizes and maintains inventory of maintenance supplies and tools.
  • Paints facility fields, buildings (both exterior and interior), doors, etc., as needed.
  • Sets up layout of fields for various sports hosted at the facility.
  • Reports equipment malfunctions and facility maintenance needs to immediate supervisor.
  • Performs duties as assigned/necessary which are related or logical in assignment to the position.
  • May perform basic electrical assignments.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Six (6) months of experience working with grass and landscaping.
  • Basic electrical skills.
  • Must be able to freely access designated female restrooms and locker rooms throughout the day while occupied with guests.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver’s License.
  • Must be willing to work nights, weekends, and holidays.

  • Ability to operate various basic tools and groundskeeping equipment, e.g., hammer, screwdriver, wrench, saw, lawn mower, edger, chainsaw, blower.
  • Ability to operate various vehicles, trucks, light construction equipment, and machinery, e.g., service trucks, forklifts, backhoe, grader, bulldozer, dump trucks.
  • Ability to work at heights up to 20 feet.

Physical Demands

  • Heavy physical demand: 100 pounds maximum lifting.
  • Frequent (up to 2/3 of the work time) lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs.
  • Expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken word or perceiving sound by ear.
  • Good eyesight for the production or safety of self and others.
  • Physical demand requirements exceed medium work.
  • Physical agility required in climbing, bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, and crawling.

Environmental Factors

  • Ability to work in temperatures exceeding 100 degrees for extended periods.
  • Ability to withstand exposure to dust, mold, fiberglass, and various chemicals.
  • Exposure to adverse weather conditions, extreme heat or cold, noise, and dust.
