About the Role
The Sports Director provides leadership and management for the branch in the Sports program area, including operations, staff, budget, fundraising, and program/membership experience. This role ensures compliance with Greater Wichita YMCA policies, procedures, and standards and requires a 40-hour work week.
Responsibilities
- Staff/Volunteer Development:
- Recruit, train, develop, schedule, and manage a high-performing volunteer base focused on exceptional youth coaching.
- Develop strategies to support and motivate volunteers for goal achievement and retention.
- Document coaches' meetings, development, and trainings.
- Ensure all volunteers undergo background checks.
- Program Operations:
- Communicate the mission, vision, and values of the Wichita YMCA.
- Ensure all programs comply with YMCA standards and methods of operation.
- Integrate member-service and engagement strategies into programs to drive recruitment and retention.
- Build and expand program enrollment and participation.
- Manage the registration process for all sport seasons.
- Organize and train coaches for team and league formation.
- Monitor and evaluate program delivery and volunteer effectiveness for quality assurance.
- Schedule, communicate, and observe all sport practices.
- Recruit, train, and schedule sports officials.
- Prepare for, attend, and manage all game days, staff, and volunteers.
- Organize team photos and end-of-season awards.
- Maintain visibility to staff and members on all game days.
- Respond to member and community inquiries/concerns within 24 hours.
- Communicate program information, changes, and needs promptly to supervisors and branch staff.
- Child Abuse Prevention:
- Adhere to boundary policies and attend required training.
- Follow procedures for high-risk activities and supervision.
- Report suspicious behaviors and policy violations.
- Comply with mandated reporting requirements.
- Provide written and verbal communication to team parents and coaches regarding YMCA policies.
- Fiscal Management:
- Develop, monitor, and meet or exceed budget targets.
- Produce efficient staff schedules within payroll budget parameters.
- Fundraising and Community Development:
- Provide leadership for the Strong Community Campaign, special events, and other fund development initiatives to meet fundraising goals.
- Facilities Management:
- Secure, schedule, and prepare athletic fields and facilities for practices and games.
- Transport and set up equipment for games and practices at all sites.
- Maintain familiarity with risk management procedures and policies.
- Maintain program areas and equipment in a clean, safe, and orderly condition; report irregularities to maintenance.
- Keep an up-to-date inventory of all equipment, materials, and supplies.
- Additional Duties:
- Serve as a member of the branch management team to support overall branch operations.
- Communicate information promptly to branch leadership and departmental staff.
- Attend applicable training and conferences for professional development.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Education/Experience:
- Minimum age of 21.
- One year of management experience, including hiring, firing, reviewing, and budgeting.
- Relevant department experience.
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred.
- Job Requirements:
- Commitment to the YMCA mission, vision, and values.
- Attend New Employee Orientation within 30 days of hire.
- Complete CPR/AED, First Aid, O2, and Listen First Workshop as per employment conditions.
- Understand and apply exercise science principles in a practical wellness atmosphere.
- Learn all emergency procedures and action plans for the branch.
- Understand and abide by all association policies and procedures.
- Work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends, to meet branch and program needs.
- Essential Functions/Physical and Mental Requirements:
- Routinely perform physical activities such as climbing stairs, bending, stooping, kneeling, twisting, reaching, sitting, standing for extended periods, walking, and lifting/moving up to 50 pounds.
- Possess finger dexterity, grasp, and perform repetitive motions.
- Effectively communicate orally and in writing.
- Lead, delegate, and problem-solve in a rapidly changing environment.
