Spiral Operator - 1st Shift

About the Role

Set up and operate all equipment in the spiral department, including bobbin winding, machine operation, and changeovers. Perform tasks such as loading/unloading bobbins, stringing decks, setting preforms, running hose, and changing tube/layer/cover or machine tooling/gears based on product specifications. Additional duties include wrapping nylon tape, using calipers, completing paperwork, and documenting product quality.

Responsibilities

• Operate spiral machines, including changeovers and adjustments for product specifications.
• Wind bobbins, strip bobbins, and set tension.
• Load and unload bobbins, string decks, set preforms, and run hose.
• Change tube, layer, cover, machine tooling, and gears as required.
• Wrap nylon tape and use calipers accurately.
• Complete and maintain accurate production paperwork.
• Understand and follow process specification sheets.
• Document good and non-conforming product.
• Work safely in accordance with regulations, standards, and procedures.
• Report unsafe conditions, practices, or incidents to management immediately.
• Prevent excess waste of product and components through efficient equipment operation.
• Maintain production schedules and participate in peer-based teams (e.g., Lean Manufacturing, 5-S).
• Work overtime as required, including extended shifts and weekends, to meet business needs.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the shift supervisor or management.

Requirements

• High School diploma or GED.
• Production work experience preferred but not required.
• Good verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
• Basic knowledge and use of hand tools.
• Sound decision-making skills.
• Proficiency in math, reading, and writing.
• Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and strong troubleshooting skills.
• Ability to exercise continuous mental, visual, and audio attention.
• Ability to work well in a team environment.
• Basic computer skills.
• Ability to monitor machine sounds to identify and diagnose changes.
• Near vision acuity and accommodation for reading and performing job tasks.
• Constant alertness to surroundings and product quality, with attention to detail.
• Must pass pre-employment screening.

• Ability to work overtime, including short-notice overtime and weekend coverage.

Organizational Relationships

Report directly to the Value Stream Team Leader. Work closely with Maintenance to resolve equipment issues.
