Speech-Language Pathologist -Part Time - Intensive Comprehensive Aphasia Program

About the role

Evaluate patients' speech, language, and swallowing abilities to formulate and conduct treatment plans designed to improve communicative efficiency for those with communication problems.

Responsibilities

• Establish patient treatment goals tailored to each patient's needs and capabilities.
• Review patient charts, interview patients/families, and consult with physicians, audiologists, and other clinical professionals to evaluate patient conditions according to standard procedures.
• Counsel patients, family members, and significant others regarding communication deficits and instruct them in proper management techniques.
• Monitor patient progress, re-establish goals, revise treatment plans, and alert physicians to changes in patient conditions.
• Evaluate patients' current pain levels (0-10) and history of recent pain experience; provide pain education and intervention in consultation with physicians and pain specialists; conduct ongoing pain assessments and implement management tools.
• Maintain clinical records, including diagnostic reports, progress reports, discharge summaries, re-evaluations, rechecks, family/professional contact summaries, and daily statistics.
• Attend patient team conferences, clinics, in-service education classes, and meetings to gather and exchange patient/treatment information.
• Perform other duties assigned in the best interest of the organization.

Requirements

• Master’s or doctoral degree in Speech-Language Pathology from a program accredited by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
• Current Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
• Current Illinois license as a Speech-Language Pathologist or Temporary license if in Clinical Fellowship Year.
• Current CPR or BLS certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
• Complete SRAIS training programs and utilize SRAIS in performing job duties, as needed.
• Clinical Specialty Recognition by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association or certification in neurological communication disorders by the Academy of Neurological Communication Disorders and Sciences is desired.

Skills & Abilities

• Knowledge of diagnoses and treatment types for speech, language, swallowing, and behavior problems in neurologically impaired patients.
• Understanding of the growth and development of infant, child, adolescent, and geriatric patients, and ability to interpret related information to meet patient needs.
• Interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with patients, families, physicians, audiologists, and other clinical professionals.
• Analytical skills to administer and evaluate standardized speech/language tests, assess patient capabilities, develop treatment plans, and monitor progress.
• Ability to adhere to the Code of Ethics established by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
• Ability to lift up to 20 pounds occasionally and up to 10 pounds frequently to transfer and position patients.

Working Conditions

• Normal office environment with minimal exposure to dust or extreme temperatures.
• Exposure to infectious diseases when working with patients.
• May include community, home, work, school, and off-site clinic settings.
