Speech Language Pathologist Contingent Days

About the Role

Under general supervision and according to established policies and procedures, diagnoses and treats speech, language, swallowing, and cognitive disorders in a pediatric setting. The role involves working at Children’s Hospital of Michigan, a leading institution in pediatric and adolescent medicine with specialized services including general, thoracic, reconstructive, and cardiovascular surgery, advanced diagnostic imaging, a Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center, and a dedicated pediatric burn center.

Responsibilities

• Diagnose speech, language, cognitive, and oral-pharyngeal swallowing disorders using tests such as articulation, language, voice/resonance, fluency, and cognitive communications skills.
• Research and analyze patients’ medical history from test performances, medical records, and case histories to inform diagnosis and treatment.
• Design and administer treatment plans for patients with speech, language, and oral-pharyngeal swallowing disorders.
• Counsel, educate, and advise patients and their families on communicative, cognitive, and swallowing functioning; develop home programs as needed.
• Document diagnostic reports and therapeutic progress notes according to departmental procedures; code information for billing to ensure maximum reimbursement from third-party payers.
• Participate as a member of the inter-disciplinary rehabilitation team; attend chart rounds and departmental meetings.
• Provide presentations and/or in-service education to professional staff, students, and the outside community.
• May instruct and monitor speech and language pathology interns.
• Enhance professional expertise through seminars, workshops, conferences, reading, and participation in professional organizations.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Speech and Language Pathology.
• Current license to practice as a Speech Language Pathologist in the State of Michigan.
• Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech and Hearing Association.
• Six to twelve months of additional experience preferred.

• Verbal and written communication skills for writing reports and delivering presentations.
• Analytical skills to interpret diagnostic tests, assess patient progress toward communication goals, and determine appropriate functional communication levels.
