Speech & Language Pathologist

Position Summary

The Speech and Language Pathologist provides a treatment program for those clients whose ability to comprehend, articulate or communicate has been impaired by the developmental process, disease, or injury. Performs care according to the Speech/Language Practice Act and Agency policies and procedures.

Primary Responsibilities

• Treatment Planning & Therapy
• Evaluate levels of speech, language, or swallowing difficulty
• Identify clients' goals for treatment
• Create and carry out an individualized treatment plan that addresses specific functional needs
• Teach clients how to make sounds, improve their voices, and maintain fluency
• Help clients improve vocabulary and sentence structure
• Work with clients to develop and strengthen the muscles used to swallow
• Counsel clients and their families on how to cope with communication and swallowing disorders
• Conduct assessments, treatment plans, and therapeutic interventions in an interdisciplinary environment integrated into classrooms, school-related activities, as well as via the pull-out model
• Co-treating and co-teaching options available, as well as individual and small group therapy models

Requirements

• Required Education and Licensure: Masters in Speech-Language Pathology or Communicative Sciences and Disorders
• Must possess an active Illinois SLP license
• Valid driver’s license required. Must meet state regulating agency and Home Office driving requirements
• Must successfully pass an IL DCFS criminal background check
• Must have the ability to build strong relationships with diverse individuals or communities and understand their unique needs and challenges
• Must be open to meeting the cultural needs of individuals or communities, considering factors such as language, traditions, and values

Preferred Education And Experience

• 2+ years’ experience in an educational or residential setting
• One (1) year of directly related experience
• CCC-SLP and ASHA certification
• ICARE Values & Behavioral Competencies

Work Environment

• Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods of time (2-4 hours)
• Must be able to bend, twist and stretch in a manner conducive to the execution of daily activities within a residential program
• Must be able to assist in proper restraining of residents
• Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds unassisted and up to 100 pounds with assistance

Expected Hours of Work

• Days and hours of work throughout the week with the expectation to work specific schedules and hours as identified and communicated by management
• Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand
