About the role

To diagnose and implement treatment of communication disorders that interfere with the student’s ability to achieve in the district's educational program.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a quality therapy program.
  • Provide screening to identify speech/language handicapped children.
  • Provide thorough assessment and diagnosis of articulation, voice, and fluency and language impairments, including receptive, expressive and pragmatic skills.
  • Compile case history data on those cases where additional family history, health history, early developmental history, and environmental history are deemed appropriate.
  • Aid in proper referrals of individuals to outside agencies and specialists as appropriate.
  • Serve on diagnostic teams for purposes of identifying and recommending services and/or treatment of pupils with communication problems.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to implement therapy by suggestions for the student’s daily activities.
  • Provide information, support and counseling to parents and families when appropriate.
  • Establish specific pupil instructional objectives with complement the objectives of the total school program.
  • Update objectives regularly, and redefine or modify the instructional procedures and materials as needed.
  • Conduct individual and/or small group therapy for speech and language students and determine the frequency and duration of sessions based on pupil need.
  • Serve as a resource to school personnel and parents in the development of a program for oral communication and speech improvement.
  • Provide inservice education; serve as a consultant to teachers on topics concerning speech improvement, and assist teachers in referring suspected speech/language impairments.
  • Maintain data and reporting systems to facilitate program planning management and evaluation of students and is responsible for case management, case selection, case termination and follow-up procedures.
  • Assume primary responsibility for requisitioning and maintaining needed equipment and supplies.
  • Be responsible for student Individual Educational Plan development and implementation.
  • Create an effective environment for learning through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards and interest centers.
  • Maintain professional competence through inservice education activities provided by the district and self-selected professional growth activities.
  • Fulfill other assignments given by supervisors.
  • Participate in curriculum development programs as required.
  • Provide community education as a resource speaker as needed.
  • Willingness and flexibility to adopt new teaching strategies into their therapy.

Qualifications

  • Earned an MS or MA degree in communication disorders with emphasis in Speech/Language Pathology.
  • Licensed through KDHE.

  • Ability and knowledge to maintain a quality therapy program.
