Speech Language Pathologist

Location: Mound Park Upper Elementary School (60%) and Westview Elementary School (40%) – 2026-2027 school year

Provides instruction to students by developing, selecting, and modifying instructional plans and materials, and presenting them using current instructional techniques to meet the needs of all students. Creates an atmosphere and environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development of students. Supervises students in various school-related settings and activities, monitors and evaluates student performance, and develops and implements plans to improve student performance. Maintains required records and follows established procedures and practices.

Founded in 1920, Fitzgerald Public Schools serves 2,200 students with 350 staff members. We operate an early childhood center (PreK-K), two elementary schools (grades 1-3 and 4-5), a middle school (grades 6-8) with one of the county’s planetariums, a high school (grades 9-12) featuring a state-of-the-art automotive service center, and a virtual academy. The district also offers award-winning athletic and marching band programs, in-house food service, transportation, custodial and maintenance teams, and school-age child care through a local provider.

Responsibilities

• Serve as a resource to school staff in developing a balanced program for oral communication and speech improvement across multiple settings.
• Assist and guide teachers in observing, describing, and referring students with suspected and identified speech and language impairments.
• Conduct regular screenings for students suspected of speech impairments at specified intervals and grade levels.
• Design and deliver individualized therapy programs to correct existing speech or language handicaps.
• Collaborate with classroom teachers and other staff to integrate therapy into students’ daily activities.
• Provide information, support, and counseling to parents and families as appropriate.
• Conduct and document written evaluations for students with suspected disabilities or those enrolled in special education, assessing speech, voice, language, and oral motor skills.
• Deliver direct one-on-one and group speech and language services to eligible students with disabilities.
• Consult with staff and parents/guardians on speech and language services, including augmentative communication systems and devices tailored to individual student needs.
• Develop and write annual goals and short-term instructional objectives for students on the caseload.
• Attend, chair, and participate in Multidisciplinary Evaluation Team (MET) and Individualized Education Program Team (IEPT) meetings as required.
• Compile and maintain records, written reports, and documentation for students on the caseload or as part of response-to-intervention assessments.
• Oversee requisitioning and maintenance of equipment and supplies for speech and language services.
• Provide in-service training to staff and parents on integrating language development and supportive therapies into daily classroom instruction and other environments.

Requirements

• Master’s degree in speech and language pathology.
• Valid Michigan Speech-Language Pathologist License and Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), or working toward certification (CFY).
• Must pass a criminal background check.
• Experience servicing children with speech and language impairments.
• Ability to bill for services through the county Medicaid system.
• Knowledge of and ability to follow all state and federal guidelines and timelines for servicing and assessing children with speech and language impairments.
• Ability to work with a diverse student population.
• High level of commitment to working within a culturally, ethnically, and economically diverse environment.
