About the Role

The Special Education Para-Educator II (untrained) provides support to the instructional program under the supervision of an occupational therapist. This role focuses on instruction in fine motor, gross motor, and self-help skills in both group and one-on-one settings. The position is itinerant, requiring travel between schools. Access to a vehicle and a valid driver's license are required.

Under the primary direction of Motor Professionals (physical therapists, occupational therapists, adaptive P.E. specialists), the Para-Educator will implement activities and exercises, prepare instructional materials, transport equipment, and record student progress. Attendance at scheduled training sessions is required.

Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds and maintain strict confidentiality regarding all student information.

Responsibilities

• Adapts classroom activities, assignments, and/or materials under the direction of the supervising teacher to support and reinforce classroom objectives and IEP goals.
• Administers immediate first aid and medical assistance as instructed by a health care professional (e.g., medication).
• Assists students with self-care activities (e.g., toileting, washing, changing diapers, eating, dressing, grooming) to maintain personal hygiene.
• Attends job-specific trainings (e.g., first aid, behavior management) to acquire and convey information relative to job functions.
• Collects data to support teachers in the classroom and prepare reports or process forms.
• Communicates with supervising instructional staff and professional support personnel to assist in evaluating progress and/or implementing IEP objectives.
• Implements, under the supervision of assigned teacher, behavioral plans designed by the IEP team for students with behavior disorders or other special conditions.
• Maintains instructional materials and manual/electronic files/records (e.g., decorating bulletin boards, making art projects, correcting papers).
• Monitors students during assigned periods in various school environments (e.g., restrooms, playgrounds, hallways, bus loading zones, cafeteria, parking lots) to maintain a safe and positive learning environment.
• Provides instruction to students in individual and group activities (e.g., academic subjects, social skills, daily living skills) under the supervision of assigned teacher to reinforce instructional objectives and implement IEP plans.
• Attends meetings and in-service presentations (e.g., first aid, CPR, emergency procedures) to acquire and convey information relative to job functions.
• Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Requirements

• 16+ years old.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Job-related experience is desired.
• Must have access to a vehicle and a current, valid driver's license.
• Ability to lift at least 50 pounds.
• Must maintain strict confidentiality regarding all student information.
