Specimen Receiving and Phlebotomy Lead

About the Role

At Stony Brook Medicine, a TH Instructional Support Assistant in the Department of Laboratories is a valuable member of our team, providing clinical services to our patient population. The role involves maintaining specific knowledge of safe laboratory practices as endorsed by the New York State Department of Health and Occupational Safety and Health Administration, ensuring the safety of all lab personnel.

Responsibilities

• Oversee day-to-day operations of Specimen Receiving and Phlebotomy.
• Function as a shift team leader/coordinator, directing personnel and monitoring Phlebotomy Services and Specimen Receiving activities.
• Ensure adequate staffing and adherence to SBUH, Departmental, and Regulatory Policies, Procedures, and Standards.
• Complete worksheets, daily logs, and reconciliation of uncollected specimens prior to the end of the shift.
• Collect various laboratory statistics on a regular basis.
• Develop, implement, and modify procedures to streamline workflow processes.
• Assist with the Specimen Receiving and Phlebotomy Policy and Procedures Manual.
• Train staff for continued accreditation and as per established policies and procedures.
• Perform phlebotomy.
• Report outstanding issues or problems to supervisory staff and attend staff meetings.
• Initiate requests for personnel, equipment, and supplies for areas of responsibility.
• Prepare and monitor schedules, S&E, PSR, and capital equipment budgeting.
• Exhibit service excellence in all interactions with clients, responding in a timely manner and providing accurate information.
• Act as a liaison with all patient units and clinics that use laboratory services.
• Assist supervisor to ensure all necessary specimen-collecting supplies are provided to clients.
• Utilize computer systems (LIS and Cerner) for patient care functions, such as laboratory registration processes, inventory control, QC, and audits.
• Instruct staff on proper use of computer technology.
• Handle ad-hoc projects as assigned.
• Ensure processes are not utilized in the event of non-conformance until corrective actions have been taken and staff are properly trained.
• Serve as a professional role model in representing the department of laboratories.
• Complete yearly competency assessments including e-learning systems and Policy Tech.
• Rotate between the Customer Service Center, the Patient Service Center, and off-site areas to meet operational needs.

Requirements

• Current Phlebotomy Certification.
• Four years of phlebotomy experience, including a minimum of one-year pediatric phlebotomy experience.
• One year of supervisory experience and customer service experience in a healthcare setting or related field.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Knowledge of laboratory operations and laboratory and/or hospital-based information systems.

Preferred Qualifications

• Knowledge of wireless hand-held blood collection devices.
• Associate’s Degree.
• Computer competency in Microsoft Applications.

Stony Brook Medicine is a smoke-free environment. This position may require the wearing of respiratory protection, which may prohibit the wearing of facial hair. The role may be designated as "essential," requiring the employee to remain at work or report to work during institutional emergencies.

Pay

The anticipated pay range for this position is $49,308 - $57,693 base salary. The specific salary offer will be based on the candidate’s validated years of comparable experience. Some positions offer annual supplemental pay, such as location pay for full-time positions ($4,000).
