Duties and Responsibilities
- Accurately follow physician orders when ordering the test(s) in the Laboratory computer system.
- Determine and implement the appropriate course of action when unsure of an order or specimen required.
- Accurately document all pertinent patient demographic and insurance information if performing the registration function.
- Receive specimens in the Laboratory computer system and distribute them in accordance with the urgency of the test requested.
- Prepare specimens according to the procedure for the test requested and store specimens at the appropriate storage temperature, if not immediately distributed.
- Process all samples correctly using aseptic technique including centrifugation of samples and liquating samples if needed.
- Processes send out testing to Quest and other reference labs and create the proper site batches by temperature.
- Maintain competencies (position specific and hospital-wide) required for the specific patient population served.
- Answer telephone according to Laboratory policy, take and relay messages accurately to the appropriate person.
- Absorb and assist callers with questions either answering their questions or directing them to the appropriate resource.
- FAX results in accordance with Laboratory and Hospital policy.
- Communicate information and instructions regarding tests and specimen collection to clients (e.g. patients and/or family members, physicians, other healthcare providers) in a manner appropriate to and respectful of the population of the client even under adverse conditions.
- Communicate to next shift significant events/information and/or pending testing.
- May be required to learn and maintain competency to perform phlebotomy including phlebotomy performance, population-appropriate patient education on post-phlebotomy care, and any documentation required.
- Maintain supplies in working area.
- Submit orders, as needed, according to standard Laboratory policy and procedure.
- Maintain phlebotomy trays in neat orderly manner.
- Monitor equipment function and document information as required by Laboratory policy.
- Take corrective action as needed in consultation with the Supervisor and document it.
- Attend and participate in department, hospital and committee meetings as appropriate.
- Participate in continuing education initiatives and seminars.
- Assist with local, state, federal, and regulatory agency compliance and preparedness activities.
Qualifications
- High School diploma or GED required.
- 0-1 years of applicable experience in a laboratory setting. Degree or credits in any college science course preferred.
- No licenses or certifications required.
- Basic knowledge of Microsoft works, excel, Microsoft power point and computer skills.
- Must be organized and work to meet deadlines.
- Exercise independent judgement within boundaries of knowledge and skills.
- Excellent communication (verbal and written) and customer service (positive and professional) skills.
- Excellent analytical skills required, well-organized, detail-oriented, with the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively under pressure within a collaborative team oriented environment.
- Flexible to take on variety of tasks, adaptable and can anticipate opportunities for additional contributions.
- Requirement of high level of integrity and confidentiality.
