Specimen Processor
About the role
The Specimen Processor plays a crucial role in ensuring the accuracy and timely processing of medical specimens for testing. This position requires strong communication, organizational, and customer service skills.
Responsibilities
- Accession and data entry of incoming specimens into the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
- Review requisitions for completeness and ensure proper specimen handling, identification, and labeling according to laboratory procedures.
- Maintain detailed records of specimen rejection and problem logs.
- Triage specimens to the appropriate department and contact external pathology laboratories as needed.
- Aid in specimen shipping coordination and communicate testing status and non-conformance to collection sites.
- Resolve communication issues with collection sites as needed.
- Obtain necessary clinical information for quality control and billing purposes, and interact with billing services to ensure correct clinical information is provided.
- Engage with ordering physician offices, patients, and payors to verify coverage and obtain preauthorization for testing.
- Follow up on issued final reports and return patient testing samples to their originating laboratory.
- Maintain patient privacy and adhere to HIPAA regulations.
- Assist in daily lab functions and responsibilities, performing general laboratory duties consistent with a CLIA-certified laboratory, including quality control activities.
- Show strong human relations, communication, and organizational skills.
- Support and comply with company policies and procedures, including the Quality Management System.
- Work designated shifts and be available for overtime as needed.
- Operate a computer and phone simultaneously.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with healthcare and research professionals.
Qualifications
- Associates Degree in a biological science field preferred.
- Experience with handling medical specimens preferred.
Skills
Strong human relations, communication, and organizational skills are essential. Ability to work designated shifts and be available for overtime is required.

The annual base salary range for this position is $32,000.00 - $53,000.00, and candidates may be eligible for bonuses.
