About the role
The Specimen Processing Technician I (SPT I) provides general support within the Specimen Processing Department. Functions include A-station, presort, pickup and delivery of processed specimens, imaging/microfilming, centrifugation, and aliquoting. All tasks must be performed accurately and promptly in a biohazard environment while adhering to safety protocols. The role demands strong organizational skills, adaptability to daily regulatory changes, and the ability to meet productivity and quality standards in a production-oriented setting.
Responsibilities
- Perform data entry with a minimum of 6,000 alphanumeric keystrokes per hour
- Handle specimen processing tasks such as presort, centrifugation, and aliquoting
- Pick up and deliver processed specimens to the laboratory
- Operate imaging/microfilming equipment
- Understand and apply compliance regulations related to test ordering, which may change daily
- Maintain a clean and organized work area
- Communicate effectively with staff at all levels
- Adapt to changing demands and priorities, including weekends, holidays, on-call, and overtime as needed
- Sit or stand for extended periods
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Basic computer skills; knowledge of laboratory testing or specimen processing preferred
- No prior experience required, but previous laboratory, medical, or production environment experience is a plus
- Familiarity with medical terminology applicable to a clinical laboratory
- Ability to work nightshift (majority of shifts are 8:00 PM to 4:30 AM, Monday–Friday)
- Flexibility to work weekends, holidays, on-call, and overtime based on staffing needs
