Specimen Processing - Specimen Technician

About the Role

The Specimen Processing Technician I (SPT I) is responsible for general support functions within the Specimen Processing Department. This position requires a data entry background and involves tasks such as A-station processing, presort, pickup and delivery of processed specimens, imaging/microfilming, centrifugation, and aliquoting. All functions must be performed with confidence, accuracy, and in a timely manner.

This role is critical to quality and customer satisfaction, requiring strong organizational skills and the ability to learn and understand specimen types related to tests ordered by clients. The SPT I must also learn and adhere to compliance regulations, which may change daily. Flexibility is essential, as demands from customers vary frequently.

The majority of work is on the night shift (2100–0400, Monday–Friday), but availability for weekends, holidays, on-call, and overtime is required based on staffing needs. The department operates in a production environment with an emphasis on productivity, quality standards, and completion times.

Responsibilities

• Perform general support functions in specimen processing, including A-station, presort, pickup/delivery of specimens, imaging/microfilming, centrifugation, and aliquoting.
• Enter data accurately at a rate of 6,000 alphanumeric keystrokes per hour.
• Adhere to compliance regulations related to test ordering, which may change daily.
• Maintain a clean and organized work area in a biohazard environment while practicing good safety habits.
• Communicate effectively with all levels of staff and adapt to changing demands from customers.
• Work in a production environment, meeting productivity and quality standards.
• Sit or stand for long periods as required by the role.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Basic understanding of computers; preferred knowledge of laboratory testing or specimen processing.
• No prior experience required, but previous laboratory experience or a medical background (including medical terminology) is preferred.
• Previous experience in a production environment is a plus.
• Ability to learn and adapt to changing compliance regulations and specimen types.
• Strong interpersonal skills and flexibility to adapt to change.

Schedule

3rd shift: 2100–0400, Monday–Friday. Availability for weekends, holidays, on-call, and overtime is required based on staffing needs.
