Specialty Welder

About the role

The right candidate will have four years of welding experience in the petrochemical industry or related field with the required weld testing certifications from Starcon to perform the assigned tasks.

Responsibilities

• Perform X-ray quality welding in all positions with the SMAW and GTAW processes using a variety of electrodes.
• Use torch cutting and operate equipment such as pipe beveling machines.
• Assure all hold points and requirements on code work are met.
• Willing to perform tasks other than welding, such as pipe fitting and boilermaker duties as directed.

Requirements

Must have four years of welding experience in the petrochemical industry or related field and possess the required weld testing certifications from Starcon.

Qualifications

• Ability to read and understand WPS/PQR documents.
• Competent to verify fit-ups and dimensions.
• Ability to read and understand plans, isometric drawings, and blueprints.
• Basic understanding of isometric drawings and blueprints.
• Mathematical skills as they pertain to the execution of work tasks.
• Able to pass the appropriate weld test(s) given by Starcon or client.
• Welding in confined spaces.
• Welding in awkward positions and locations.
• Ability to conduct field measurements, fabricate, modify and/or revise piping per sketches, isometric drawings and blueprints.
• Basic rigging knowledge associated with moving piping details and fittings.
• Set up own jobs, string welding leads, build fireboxes in preparation for welding, etc.

Skills

• Perform X-ray quality welding in all positions with SMAW and GTAW processes using a variety of electrodes.
• Weld piping, structural steel and supports.
• Specific weld test capabilities:
  • 2” GTAW .688” coupon (100% X-ray) – Standard test
  • 2” GTAW Root & hot, SMAW 701 Fill & cap. (100% X-ray) – Standard test
  • 4” S/80 GTAW 35/45 to 25/35 in convection box simulation. (100% X-ray) – additional for Tube welder
  • 4” S/80 GTAW 800HT to 304 in convection box simulation. (100% X-ray) – additional Tube welder

Post Hire Requirements

• Always be in compliance with all of Starcon and clients’ safety and quality control procedures.
• Work in a team effort with all team members to reach a common goal.
• Be willing to assist other crafts when directed such as pipe fitters, boilermakers, riggers, etc.

Work Environment

• Work in SCBA, special protective PPE specific to the unit and working at heights.
• Extended work hours may be required.
