About the role

The Specialty Unit Staff RN - NICU/Downey position is a key role within the healthcare team, responsible for providing professional nursing care in accordance with established standards and policies. The role requires a strong foundation in the nursing process, leadership skills, and adherence to regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Delegates tasks appropriately and demonstrates accountability.
  • Leads and directs others through the change process.
  • Mentors, orients, and coaches others in unit-specific operations and patient care activities.
  • Ensures patient safety related to medications, procedures, and infection control.
  • Ensures patient comfort and addresses patient anxieties, fears, or concerns.
  • Ensures patient understanding of medication purposes, side effects, and administration instructions.
  • Documents accurately and efficiently using computer systems.
  • Participates in departmental performance improvement activities.
  • Adheres to workplace safety principles and practices.
  • Provides courteous and respectful care to patients and families.
  • Supports a collaborative Labor-Management Partnership environment.

Requirements

  • 1-year recent (within the last 3 years) full-time equivalent experience in Level III NICU or successful completion of KP Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) course within the last 12 months.
  • Registered Nurse License (California).
  • Basic Life Support from American Heart Association.
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program.
  • May be expected to cross-train to at least one other Perinatal area.
  • Shift: 7:15 pm-7:45 am, with a backup shift of 11:15 pm to 7:45 am.

  • Nursing Process: Develops and implements individualized plans of care, monitors patient progress, revises plans based on evaluation, ensures care meets standards, and completes discharge plans.
  • Documentation: Accurate, legible, dated, and timed documentation reflecting the nursing process and interventions.
  • Team Commitment: Views others as effective team members, confronts conflicts constructively, takes accountability for actions, acts as a resource, preceptor, and mentor, attends meetings, and supports a collaborative Labor-Management Partnership environment.
  • Fiscal Responsibility: Organizes work to minimize overtime, identifies and assists in systems improvement, utilizes resources to maximize potential, and adheres to attendance program.
