About the role
AXIS Specialty A&H collaborates with various Managing General Underwriters (MGUs) and Program Managers to generate significant Accident & Health business in the U.S. and Canada, with new opportunities anticipated in 2026. In this role, you will develop, analyze, review, evaluate, and monitor new and renewal accounts, process accounts, and handle underwriting activities within established guidelines.
Responsibilities
- Perform all underwriting roles for K-12, Amateur Sports, Participant Accident, and Outbound Student.
- Underwrite existing A&H Partners:
- Evaluate cases received from MGUs and Program Managers.
- For complex opportunities/programs, review and evaluate submissions to determine risk acceptability and coverage levels, then collaborate with the Actuarial team for approval.
- Work closely with program managers and external MGUs/Program Managers to obtain additional required information for new business or renewal decisions.
- Collaborate with Legal, Product, Operations, and Business Development to modify existing MGUs/Programs.
- Develop and maintain both internal and external producer/program relationships.
- Set appropriate premium rates, issue proposals for programs/cases, and letters of intent when appropriate.
- Perform an annual portfolio review to determine renewal positions for the book of business.
- Reporting:
- Update and maintain Monthly Specialty A&H Underwriting Reports.
- Create ad hoc reports as necessary.
- Policy Issuance:
- Create and issue all policies not within the template authority delegated to MGUs/MGAs.
- Achieve targeted loss ratios and combined ratios by maintaining underwriting discipline through selection and renewal processes.
- Manage day-to-day tasks of the assigned risk portfolio.
- Act as a liaison between internal functional departments and external vendors.
- Handle special projects and assignments at the request of the A&H leadership team.
- Ensure digital files are maintained per AXIS Insurance procedures, including proper documentation, structure, and authorizations.
- Take on additional duties, responsibilities, and activities appropriate to the role as required.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Accounting, Mathematics, Finance, Risk Management, Insurance, or a related field (preferred).
- At least two (2) years of Accident & Health Underwriting experience (P&C insurance experience is helpful but not required).
- At least two (2) years of experience working with and overseeing MGAs/MGUs or Program Managers.
- Market Segment knowledge: Amateur Sports, K-12 & College Students, and Volunteer Organizations.
- Product knowledge: Accidental Death, Accident Medical Expense, Catastrophic Medical, Disability, Participant Accident, and Out-of-Country Medical Insurance.
- Other helpful product knowledge: Leisure Travel, Corporate Accident (Business Travel Accident, Voluntary Accident), Occupational Accident, Critical Illness, Life, Supplemental Medical, Dental, and Vision.
- Ability to work with large data sets to evaluate past performance and determine acceptable rating metrics.
Preferred Qualifications
- Strong project management skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 suite applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
- Experience in Power BI or other dashboard reporting systems.
- Strong presentation skills.
- Strong financial acumen.
- Demonstrated communication skills to interact effectively with Senior Management and external partners.
- Attention to detail and accuracy.
- Excellent negotiation and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Team player with the ability to work independently and display initiative.
Schedule
- Be in the office 3 days per week.
- Travel required (10%).
- Attend broker events in the evenings and occasionally on weekends as required.
Pay
For this position, the expected base salary range is $110,000–$150,000. Your salary offer will be based on an assessment of your specific experience and work location. All employees are eligible for competitive incentive targets, with awards based on overall corporate and individual performance.
