Specialized JPO - Juvenile Probation

Responsibilities

• Assess needs of juvenile and family to determine appropriate residential placement facility.
• Secure residential placement for juvenile.
• Counsel with juveniles, family, and other persons and/or agencies as needed; provide Crisis Intervention Counseling to families.
• Travel to placement facilities in and out of the state.
• Prepare documentation for cases scheduled for detention and court appearances and/or hearings; testify before court as to the recommendations required.
• Maintain written reports and daily chronological notes for each juvenile in placement or pending placement.
• Conduct random drug testing on juveniles as needed.
• Work as liaison with the District Attorney’s office and offer recommendations regarding court proceedings.
• Attend staff meetings and training conferences as required for maintenance of Juvenile Probation Officer Certification.
• Make post-placement and aftercare referrals.
• Maintain monthly contact with juvenile, family, and program staff.
• Monitor juvenile’s behavior and progress in placement; address issues as needed through face-to-face visits.
• Update the court on issues and/or changes regarding child’s progress and placement status.
• Conduct training of staff in department and other Juvenile Probation departments.
• Participate in activities and duties related to emergency management during a local state of disaster as directed by appropriate county managers.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice or other state-approved related field.
• 2 years of job-related experience.
• Good computer, verbal, and written communication skills.
• Good organizational, interpersonal skills, and ability to deal effectively with the public, other employees, and elected officials.
• Ability to complete assigned projects in a timely manner.
• Minimum 21 years of age; Certified Juvenile Probation Officer.
• On-call 24 hours a day and subject to irregular work hours.

Disqualifying Criminal History

• A felony conviction or deferred adjudication for a felony within the past 10 years, or current felony probation or parole.
• A jailable misdemeanor conviction or deferred adjudication for a jailable misdemeanor within the past 5 years, or current misdemeanor probation or parole.
• Registered as a sex offender under Chapter 62, Texas Code of Criminal Procedure.

Pay

Starting salary: $39.59 hourly. This position is eligible for additional compensation based upon state supplement and certification pay.
