Specialized Instruction (Disabled Student Programs and Services): Noncredit

About the role

Adjunct faculty positions in Specialized Instruction (Disabled Student Programs and Services): Noncredit are accepted on a continuous basis for San Diego Community College District’s three college campuses (City, Mesa, Miramar) and various continuing education centers. Hiring departments draw from the adjunct pool when a need arises and will contact qualified candidates directly. Applications are purged approximately one year after submission.

Responsibilities

• Provide instruction in accordance with established curriculum and course outlines.
• Maintain appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics.
• Maintain current knowledge in the subject matter areas.
• Fulfill professional responsibilities of a part-time/temporary faculty member.
• Teach all scheduled classes.
• Maintain accurate records.
• Provide quality instruction and create and maintain an environment that emphasizes teaching and learning and encourages free discussion of ideas, interests and issues.
• Be available to students outside of class as required by the department.

Requirements

• Degrees must be from regionally accredited institutions.
• Master’s degree in counseling, guidance counseling, student personnel, clinical or counseling psychology, education counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy, marriage, family and child counseling; or
• Bachelor’s degree in marriage and family therapy or in marriage, family and child counseling and possession of a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT); and
• Either fifteen or more semester units in upper division or graduate level course work specifically related to people with disabilities, or completion of six semester units (or equivalent) of graduate-level counseling practicum or field work in a post-secondary DSPS Program or a program dealing predominantly or exclusively with people with disabilities, or two years of full-time experience (or equivalent) in one or more of the following areas:
  • A bachelor’s degree with majors such as education of students with specific or multiple disabilities; special education; psychology; physical education with an emphasis in adaptive physical education; communicative disorders; rehabilitation; computer-based education; other computer-related majors including course work on adapted or assistive computer technology for students with disabilities; or other majors related to providing specialized instruction or services to persons with disabilities.
  • An associate degree with one of the majors above and four years of experience providing specialized instruction or services to persons in the disability category or categories being served.
  • For noncredit vocational courses: an associate degree or certificate of training; four years of occupational experience related to the subject of the course taught; and two years of experience providing specialized instruction or services to persons in the disability category being served.

Qualifications

• Certificate of Tuberculosis Exam for initial appointment (renewed every 4 years).
• Fingerprint clearance via Live Scan (district-paid).
• Proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
• Demonstrated cultural competency and sensitivity to diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and staff.

If you do not possess the exact degrees listed or anticipate receiving the required degree prior to the start of teaching, you may complete a “Request for Equivalency Form.” Applicants with foreign degrees must have their coursework evaluated by a NACES member or ACEI; the evaluation must be submitted with the application.
