Specialist Radiological Controls Technician
About the Role
The Radiological Controls Operations unit at the Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is seeking to hire a Radiological Controls Technician (RCT). This position offers hands-on experience in an industrial work environment, including performing radiological surveys in support of site operations, overseeing radiological work evolutions, and responding to unexpected conditions. The RCT must uphold radiological standards, use resources efficiently, and work independently with effective decision-making abilities.
The successful candidate will complete a substantial and demanding qualification program, including site-specific orientation and training, as well as a 22-week course at the Radiological Controls Technician Qualification School (RCTQS) in Norfolk, Virginia. Initial and periodic re-qualification involves practical demonstrations, written and oral examinations, and drills. Previous experience will be evaluated regarding qualification requirements.
The candidate must pass a mathematical examination prior to attending RCTQS, demonstrating the ability to solve algebraic equations, including logarithmic functions and scientific notation. Qualified technicians will participate in a continuing training program to maintain and improve their knowledge.
The role requires physical activities such as bending, stooping, squatting, kneeling, crouching, and climbing ladders. Candidates must understand complex verbal and written instructions, perform tasks requiring manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination, and pass periodic physical exams and drug screening tests.
Requirements
The following combinations of knowledge and skill are required:
- High school diploma or equivalent and RCTQS qualified and a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience; or
- High school diploma or equivalent and RCTQS qualified and qualification as a Naval Nuclear Propulsion Operator (or commercial nuclear equivalent) and a minimum of 9 years of relevant experience; or
- High school diploma or equivalent and RCTQS qualified and certification with the National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologists (NRRPT) and a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience; or
- High school diploma or equivalent and RCTQS qualified and qualification as a Naval Nuclear Propulsion Operator (or commercial nuclear equivalent) and certification with the NRRPT and a minimum of 7 years of relevant experience; or
- Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university or Journeyman’s Papers in a related field and RCTQS qualified and a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience; or
- Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university or Journeyman’s Papers in a related field and RCTQS qualified and certification with the NRRPT and a minimum of 6 years of relevant experience; or
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and RCTQS qualified and a minimum of 6 years of relevant experience; or
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and RCTQS qualified and certification with the NRRPT and a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience.
Preferred Skills
- Previous experience as a Contamination Worker.
- Previous completion of Radiological Controls Technician Qualification School (RCTQS) and/or past qualification as an RCT within the NNPP Program.
- Experience with Microsoft Office computer programs.

Pay
Pay Range: $95,700.00 - $149,600.00 annually. Salary is based on candidate experience, qualifications, market, and business considerations.
Additional Information
The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is operated for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) by Fluor Marine Propulsion, LLC (FMP). All candidates must be U.S. citizens and able to pass a drug test in compliance with FMP policy and 10 CFR 707.
