About the Role

The Specialist, Membership Engagement supports the implementation of membership engagement strategies and programs for the SHRM Northern California Community. Working closely with the Director and cross-functional teams, this role coordinates initiatives that strengthen member engagement, support membership growth and retention, and enhance the overall member experience. The Specialist serves as a primary resource for volunteer leaders, members, and prospective members by coordinating programs, communications, sponsorship activities, and community engagement efforts.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the implementation of membership engagement initiatives, programs, and campaigns that support membership growth, engagement, and retention within the Northern California Community.
  • Partner with the Director and internal departments to execute community priorities, annual plans, and strategic initiatives.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with volunteer leaders, members, prospective members, student chapters, and affiliated organizations.
  • Manage volunteer committees, including scheduling meetings, preparing agendas, documenting meeting outcomes, communicating action items, and supporting committee chairs in implementing work plans.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for inquiries received through the SHRM website and Northern California community email regarding membership, volunteer opportunities, certification, sponsorships, and programs.
  • Coordinate logistics for in-person, virtual, and hybrid meetings and events, including registration, audiovisual setup, meeting technology, materials, badge production, onsite support, and event teardown.
  • Collaborate with Marketing and Communications to implement campaigns that promote programs, events, volunteer opportunities, and member benefits.
  • Develop materials, resources, and orientation content to support volunteer leader onboarding, engagement, and ongoing success.
  • Coordinate sponsorship activities by assisting with sponsor communications, fulfillment of sponsorship benefits, and event support.
  • Represent SHRM at community meetings, conferences, and external events by promoting programs, services, and membership opportunities.
  • Develop, publish, and manage content across social media platforms and online communities to increase engagement, strengthen brand awareness, and foster member interaction.
  • Maintain and enhance the Northern California online member community by encouraging participation, facilitating discussions, and sharing relevant content.
  • Track program participation, engagement metrics, and member feedback to support continuous improvement efforts.
  • Assist with budget tracking, expense reconciliation, and administrative support for assigned programs and events.
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Marketing, Communications, Human Resources, Nonprofit Management, or a related field preferred, or relevant equivalent experience in lieu of degree.
  • Three (3) or more years of experience in membership services, association management, nonprofit organizations, customer engagement, marketing, or a related field.
  • Experience coordinating programs, projects, meetings/events, and volunteer activities involving multiple stakeholders.
  • Experience implementing engagement, marketing, or communication initiatives.
  • Experience using social media platforms for organizational or business communications.
  • Experience working with volunteers, boards, committees, or member-based organizations preferred.

Skills

  • Strong organizational and project coordination skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Excellent relationship-building and customer service skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with members, volunteers, sponsors, and internal stakeholders.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to facilitate meetings and deliver presentations to small groups.
  • Ability to coordinate multiple projects while maintaining attention to detail and producing high-quality work.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify issues and recommend practical solutions.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within a cross-functional team environment.
  • Basic financial acumen, including tracking budgets, expenses, and invoices.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and experience using CRM or association management systems such as Salesforce, NetSuite, or similar platforms.
  • Experience utilizing social media platforms and digital engagement tools to communicate with members and build community.
  • Ability to analyze participation and engagement data to identify trends and support continuous improvement.
  • Ability to effectively leverage artificial intelligence (AI) tools and technologies to streamline workflows, enhance productivity, and improve overall work quality.

Physical Requirements

This position operates in a typical office environment (which includes a home office setting) and requires the ability to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation. Physical requirements may include:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Frequent use of hands and fingers for typing, handling documents, and using office equipment.
  • Occasional standing, walking, bending, and reaching.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 30 pounds as needed.
  • Clear verbal and written communication skills for effective interaction with colleagues and stakeholders.

Work Environment

Fully Remote: Employees must be available during standard business hours, with core hours beginning between 8:00–9:00 a.m. and concluding between 5:00–6:00 p.m.

Travel: Moderate 20 – 30%

Pay

The hiring range for this position is $78,000 to $92,000 per year. This range is an estimate, and the actual salary may vary based on the candidate's experience, skills, and qualifications.
