Specialist, Health Promotions - Asthma in Schools Initiative

About the role

The American Lung Association is seeking a Specialist, Health Promotions to join our Health Promotions department. This position is grant-funded and combines in-person and virtual work.

Responsibilities

• Develop, implement, and evaluate the Lung Friendly Schools project in Illinois, focusing on policies and practices that protect lung health and reduce the burden of asthma in schools.
• Build and maintain relationships with funders, partners, school personnel, and other stakeholders to advance program delivery, sustainability, and growth.
• Implement best practice programs to protect lung health and reduce the burden of asthma in schools.
• Coordinate all aspects of the statewide Lung Friendly Schools Workgroup, including member recruitment and retention, meeting planning, workgroup support, and providing excellent customer service.
• Coordinate assigned aspects of grant project activities such as trainings, presentations, partner recruitment, resource distribution, and serve as the lead for select activities.
• Develop and effectively use timelines and work plans to ensure completion of program deliverables.
• Represent the American Lung Association as a member of community, civic, and/or health coalitions and organizations related to the Association’s mission.
• Participate in and support area events and provide support for annual reports, awards, grants, and other activities as assigned.
• Participate on regional and national American Lung Association program workgroups and committees as requested.
• Complete other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in public health or related field or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
• Minimum 2 years of experience developing and implementing community awareness, education, and programs specifically related to areas of public health, community engagement, or public policy.
• Prior experience in public health, community relations, public policy, and/or advocacy.
• Self-starter with excellent communication skills both written and oral.
• Positive attitude with the ability to work independently and in a team environment.

• Must have a valid Driver’s license and your own reliable transportation with the ability to travel within assigned area for meetings and conferences, as well as the flexibility to work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends with some overnights required.
• Required to travel statewide to provide training and technical assistance and to attend meetings and conferences as required by assigned grants.
• Must be proficient in Microsoft Office.
