Specialist Estimator
About the role
Ahold Delhaize USA, a division of global food retailer Ahold Delhaize, supports five leading omnichannel grocery brands—Food Lion, Giant Food, The GIANT Company, Hannaford, and Stop & Shop—with services including Finance, Legal, Sustainability, Commercial, Digital and E-commerce, and Technology.
This role develops conceptual estimates for construction projects such as new stores, remodels, acquisitions, and investment properties to assist executive management in capital-funding decisions. It also estimates costs for special projects like equipment upgrades, layout changes, and discretionary improvements, collaborates with Fixed Assets and Accounting on expense projections, and advises Leadership on prototypical building and equipment cost changes.
Responsibilities
- Develop conceptual estimates for new stores, remodels, and takeover projects, including development, site, building, décor, and equipment costs for financial feasibility analysis.
- Prepare detailed cost estimates for existing and new supermarket facilities based on CAD-generated design drawings.
- Develop detailed estimates on new and current prototype formats to define design criteria for all prototype formats.
- Coordinate with Construction Designers, Project Managers, and contractors to analyze alternative pre-construction and change-order requests to optimize project costs.
- Conduct site-specific facility visits and provide recommendations for project estimates.
- Provide technical construction support and guidance to the Real Estate Department for conceptual cost budgets in new stores, takeovers, and investment properties.
- Prepare special reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing cost data and trends.
- Maintain detailed cost keys and price masters with updated current information.
- Maintain professional and technical knowledge through educational workshops, professional publications, and personal networks.
- Partner with Store Development Directors and cost estimators in other Banners to improve the estimating process and share workloads.
- Review project bids and reconcile them with approved capital expenditures before contract award.
- Onboard and train entry-level estimators on ADUSA methodology and practice.
- Monitor, react to, and communicate industry and economic trends and their impacts on construction costs.
- Manage site visits, inputs from others, workload, and own time to meet strict deadlines.
Requirements
- B.S. in Construction Management and a minimum of 5 years' experience in commercial construction or equivalent job-related experience.
- Minimum 2 years' experience in Commercial Construction Estimating.
- Experience in Commercial Construction Project Management and scheduling.
- Seasoned knowledge of design and construction methods, including alternative solutions and associated cost factors.
- Comprehensive ability to read and interpret Architectural Construction drawings related to all construction fields.
Preferred Qualifications
- B.S. in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, Building Science, Business, or related field.
- 5+ years' experience in Commercial Construction Estimating.
- 3 years' experience in Construction Project Management and scheduling.
- Seasoned knowledge of design and construction methods, including alternative solutions and associated cost factors.
- Comprehensive ability to read and interpret Architectural Construction drawings related to electrical, plumbing, and mechanical fields.
- Strong background in business, finance, and construction economics.
Schedule
Hybrid work schedule with 3 in-person days at one of our core locations (Salisbury, NC) and 2 remote days.
Pay
Salary range: $63,440–$95,160. Actual compensation may vary based on qualifications, experience, internal equity, and market conditions.
