Special Victim Advocate - Grant Position

Necessary Skills

• Possess the ability to establish empathetic relationships with crime victims
• Possess the ability to communicate well, both verbally and in writing
• Possess the ability to access community resources and advocate effectively for victims

Duties

• Inform Victims of crime of rights within the criminal justice system/Constitution
• Provide crisis and supportive counseling to victims of Domestic Violence and Sex Crimes
• Accompany victims to pre-filing interviews, discovery depositions, and court appearances
• Afford victims to understand the criminal justice process
• Make referrals to appropriate community agencies
• Intervene on behalf of victims or their family members who are having difficulty accessing community services
• Act as a liaison between victims and prosecutors
• Afford victims/survivors in applying for Crime Victim Compensation
• Afford assistance in developing and implementing viable safety plans
• Facilitate Judicial Support Groups / Psycho-Educational
• Facilitate training sessions to Prosecutors, Local Law Enforcement, and Community agencies to enhance trauma informed practices
• Maintain current and concise documentation of services provided
• Maintain current knowledge of SAO policies and procedures
• Maintain current knowledge of research/information related to domestic violence and sexual assault

High school diploma or equivalency and two (2) years’ experiences with work in the area of criminal justice, social science, counseling, public contact or customer service; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

OR

Bachelor’s Degree or MSW and one (1) year experience within the State Attorney’s Office and/or work in the area of criminal justice, social science, counseling, public contact or customer service; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Preferred fluency in Spanish and/or Creole
