MTA, New York City Transit (NYCT), Department of Security is looking for talented, ambitious and team-oriented candidates to join the Bus Fare Enforcement / EAGLE Team. The core function is to protect the assets of the agency and provide a secure environment for all who work in, visit, or use the New York City Transit System.

About the role

The Fare Enforcement Unit ensures the correct and timely payment of fares by customers using New York City Transit buses and responds to fare evasion activity on designated bus routes. The Vandalism Squad protects and prevents incidents of vandalism and graffiti in train yards, lay-up areas, bus depots, parking areas, and other NYCT facilities that could be exploited by criminals and terrorists.

Responsibilities

  • Study and analyze incident data related to etching and graffiti vandalism.
  • Conduct site investigations and assist with developing tactical plans to combat vandalism.
  • Patrol train yards, lay-up areas, and bus depots.
  • Utilize assigned electronic devices and technology to enforce Tap and Go - Proof of Payment on Transit property.
  • Issue Notice of Violations electronically using the latest technology.
  • Check the validity of customers' receipts on NYC Transit revenue vehicles to ensure compliance with fare policies.
  • Perform surveillance of fare evaders and issue summonses; use de-escalation techniques with agitated customers.
  • Investigate alleged violations of fare enforcement.
  • Monitor and coordinate activities of team members and assist as necessary.
  • Coordinate fare evasion activities with other MTA NYCT departments and NYPD.
  • Testify at hearings and in court regarding issued summonses.
  • Provide route and fare-related information to customers and assist with fare receipt issuance machines.
  • Read, interpret, and follow special written instructions and directives.
  • Record daily actions in memo books and prepare reports.
  • Perform special assignments as needed.
  • Operate a non-revenue vehicle and take turns driving a NYC Transit vehicle.
  • Retrieve video, install, test, maintain, and repair Department of Security deployable cameras, video recording equipment, network equipment (routers, switches, servers), PCs, digital video recorders, network video recorders, and wireless CCTV equipment.
  • Conduct video investigations by reviewing electronic media for incidents on NYCT property.

Requirements

  • A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent.
  • Two years of full-time experience as an investigator, of which one year must have been as an investigator in the field.
  • Possession of a valid New York State Driver’s License.
  • Must be able to obtain a security guard license.
  • Selected candidates will be subject to a full background investigation, including employment and education verification; discrepancies may lead to dismissal.

Qualifications

  • Five years in Security or Military experience is preferred.
  • Knowledge and experience relating to fare evasion enforcement and issuance of summonses.
  • Knowledge of Penal Law relating to property crime, vandalism, use of force, and fare evasion in the transportation industry.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Experience utilizing Microsoft Office (Word, Access, Excel).
  • Familiarity with video cameras or recording equipment.

Schedule

  • Flexible hours, including nights, holidays, and weekends.
  • Work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Work in bus depots, train yards, subway tunnels, and other Agency facilities.

  • 1st Year: $60,933
  • 2nd Year: $65,618
  • 3rd Year: $67,962
  • 4th Year: $72,652
  • 5th Year: $79,681
  • 6th Year: $93,740

Pursuant to the New York State Public Officers Law & the MTA Code of Ethics, employees in policymaking positions must file an Annual Statement of Financial Disclosure (FDS) with the NYS Commission on Ethics and Lobbying in Government.
