About the Role

The Certified Special Education Teacher develops and provides specialized instruction to meet the unique needs of students with disabilities. This role evaluates and assesses student progress, follows State-mandated due process procedures, and functions as the IEP manager for assigned students.

Responsibilities

• Assesses student progress and determines the need for additional reinforcement or adjustment to instructional techniques.
• Completes all district and state reporting requirements.
• Complies with all school, board of director policies, and state/federal rules and regulations.
• Supports special education evaluations and reevaluations.
• Coordinates the delivery of special education services in each student’s IEP.
• Creates a positive learning experience with emphasis on individualized instruction using approved curriculum.
• Develops and implements annual Individualized Educational Program (IEP) plans, including present levels of performance, goals, objectives, and services.
• Employs various teaching techniques, methods, and principles of learning to enable students to meet IEP goals.
• Provides direction, supervision, and evaluation of educational assistants as directed.
• Provides research-based specialized instruction aligned with each student’s IEP.
• Schedules team meetings and collaborates with TSS (Para-pros) and others to develop instructional goals and strategies.
• Serves as the primary contact for parents/guardians and works directly with districts and charter referral sources.
• Collaborates with educational professionals and community providers regarding student needs.
• Implements classroom structure to encourage student responsibility, cooperation, and mutual respect.
• Establishes and maintains student control and discipline in the classroom and school premises.
• Performs other related duties as assigned or apparent.
• Trains and consults with classroom TSS (para-pros) on adaptations, modifications, behavior plans, and interventions.

Requirements

• Ability to deliver and articulate oral presentations and written reports.
• Ability to analyze needs and problems objectively.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, staff, administration, and the public.
• Knowledge and skills in working with children with behavior and emotional disabilities.
• Knowledge of relevant technology, including the use of iPads to individualize instruction.
• Ability to report to work regularly and punctually.
• Thorough knowledge of school rules, regulations, and procedures.
• Thorough knowledge of the principles and methodology of effective teaching for students with disabilities.
• Thorough knowledge of special education principles, practices, and procedures.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in teaching from an accredited institution in the appropriate special education area.
• AZ Special Education Certification or Alternative SPED Certification (required).
• Current Arizona teaching license in the required content area or progress toward obtaining AZ certification/license.

Physical Requirements

• Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, operate a computer and other office equipment, and reach with hands and arms.
• Must occasionally lift, move, or support up to 50 pounds (or adult-sized body weight with a two-to-three-person lift).
• May require physical interaction with students who have difficulty controlling physical behavior (usage of CPI).
