This role involves developing and providing specialized instruction to meet the unique needs of students with disabilities, evaluating student progress, and managing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).

Responsibilities

  • Assess student progress and determine the need for additional reinforcement or adjustment to instructional techniques.
  • Complete all district and state reporting requirements.
  • Comply with all school, board of director policies, and state/federal rules and regulations.
  • Support in special education evaluations and reevaluations.
  • Coordinate the delivery of special education services in each student’s IEP.
  • Create a positive learning experience with emphasis on individualized instruction using approved curriculum.
  • Develop and implement annual IEP plans, including present levels of educational performance, goals, objectives, and services.
  • Employ various teaching techniques, methods, and principles of learning to enable students to meet their IEP goals.
  • Provide direction, supervision, and evaluation of educational assistants as directed.
  • Provide research-based specialized instruction aligned with each student’s IEP goals.
  • Schedule team meetings and collaborate with TSS (Para-pros) team members and others in developing instructional goals and strategies.
  • Serve as the primary contact for parents/guardians and work directly with districts and charter referral sources.
  • Collaborate and consult with educational professionals and community providers regarding students.
  • Implement classroom structure and consistency to encourage student responsibility, cooperation, and mutual respect.
  • Establish and maintain student control and discipline in the classroom and during school activities.
  • Train and provide consultation to classroom TSS (para-pros) on adaptations, modifications, and behavior plans.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or apparent to accomplish school program objectives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in teaching from an accredited institution in the appropriate special education area.
  • AZ Special Education Certification or Alternative SPED Certification (required).
  • Current Arizona teaching license in the required content area or progress toward obtaining AZ certification/license.

Skills

  • Ability to deliver and articulate oral presentations and written reports.
  • Ability to analyze needs and problems objectively.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, staff, administration, and the public.
  • Knowledge and skills in working with children with behavior and emotional disabilities.
  • Knowledge of relevant technology, including the use of iPads to individualize instruction.
  • Thorough knowledge of school rules, regulations, and procedures; ability to establish and maintain standards of behavior.
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and methodology of effective teaching of students with disabilities.
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices, and procedures of special education.

Physical Requirements

  • Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, operate a computer and other office equipment, and reach with hands and arms.
  • Must occasionally lift, move, and/or support up to 50 pounds (and/or adult-size body weight with a two-to-three-person lift).
  • Position may require physical interaction with students who have difficulty controlling physical behavior.
  • Usage of Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) techniques.
  • Ability and proven record of reporting to work regularly and punctually.
