About the Role
The Secondary Special Education Teacher supports instruction by developing individualized plans for special education students, providing classroom instruction, supervising students, collaborating with staff and administrators, and communicating with parents/guardians about programs and student progress.
Responsibilities
- Administers developmental testing programs, district assessments, and state tests to assess student competency levels and develop individualized education plans (IEPs).
- Administers, under supervision, first aid and assistance to medically fragile children (e.g., tube feeding, toileting, diapering) to provide appropriate care as assigned.
- Advises parents and/or legal guardians of student progress to communicate expectations, document student achievements, develop improvement methods, and reinforce classroom goals.
- Assesses student progress toward objectives, expectations, and goals (e.g., behavioral, communication, academic, vocational) to provide feedback to students, parents, and administration.
- Collaborates with classroom teachers to assist in implementing established curriculum and/or individual student plans.
- Collaborates with professional learning communities, instructional staff, school personnel, parents, business partners, and community resources (e.g., OT, PT, SLP) to improve student outcomes and support school improvement goals.
- Interacts consistently with students to support and educate students.
- Counsels students to improve performance and develop problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrates methods required to complete classroom and/or subject-specific assignments to provide an effective program that addresses individual student needs.
- Differentiates classroom instruction to provide instructional materials that address individualized learning styles.
- Directs para-professionals, volunteers, and/or student workers to provide an effective classroom program that addresses individual student needs.
- Instructs students to improve academic, interpersonal, and daily living skills through a defined course of study.
- Maintains confidential and non-confidential manual and electronic files and records (e.g., IEPs, SEAS) to provide up-to-date information and historical reference in accordance with administrative guidelines and legal requirements.
- Manages student behavior to provide a safe and optimal learning environment.
- Participates in meetings (e.g., SAP, IEP, PLC) to convey and gather information required to perform job functions.
- Prepares written materials (e.g., IEPs, grades, testing schedules, lesson plans, attendance records, behavior plans, daily behavior charts, anecdotal records) to document student progress and meet mandated requirements.
- Reports incidents (e.g., fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse) to maintain student safety, provide a positive learning environment, and adhere to education code and school policies.
- Responds to emergency situations to resolve immediate safety concerns and/or direct appropriate personnel for resolution.
- Responds to inquiries from students, teachers, parents, administrators, and others to resolve issues, provide information, and/or offer direction.
- Schedules students with para-professionals and other school personnel for academic and/or therapeutic instruction (e.g., OT, PT, SLP) to support IEP goals.
- Supervises students in a variety of educational environments (e.g., classroom, playground, field trips) to provide a safe and positive learning environment.
Requirements
- Job-related experience is required.
- Bachelor's degree in a job-related area.
- Units of Continuing Education.
- Missouri State Teaching Certificate.
- Must pass a pre-employment background check (criminal justice fingerprint/background clearance).
