About the role
Educating children, aged 18-22 years old, who are diagnosed with a number of physical, mental and emotional disabilities.
Responsibilities
- Guides students to learn vocational and independent living skills and work-based learning.
- Works with students individually and in small groups to reinforce basic learning and implement assigned programs.
- Administers classroom exercises, tests and assessments.
- Prepares classroom and strategies for reinforcing instructional materials and skills according to individual student needs.
- Maintains record-keeping procedures to document student learning and performance.
- Maintains health and safety of orthopedically handicapped and medically fragile students by being aware of environment and the potential hazards of each child's actions.
- Operates a variety of medical equipment including oral suctioning, gastronomy and orthopedic equipment.
- Assist students with personal hygiene; wash hands and faces; monitor individual toilet schedules; toilet students and change diapers and clothing as needed.
- Assist students with severe eating problems and monitor self-feeding students as directed by a teacher; use gastronomy and suctioning equipment and take appropriate action when students have difficulty while eating.
- Monitor and control student behavior in accordance with established guidelines.
- Attend periodic and special training and in-services related to medical interventions and the instructional program.
- Assist students with braces and wheelchairs and other orthopedic equipment; position and reposition students as needed.
- Affirmatively assist students with selected learning activities; assist students individually and in small group settings; open and close books, remove and add papers in notebooks.
- Affirmatively assist students getting on and off bus, including students in wheelchairs; accompany medically fragile students on the bus and on field trips as assigned.
Qualifications
- Delaware State Certification as: (DE 1571) Special Education Teacher of Students with Disabilities and a core content area.
- Bachelor's from an accredited college or university in Exceptional Children/Special Education or related discipline applicable to teaching assignment.
Skills
- Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiates instruction based upon student learning styles.
- Knowledge of school curriculum and concepts.
- Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans.
- Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
- Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed.
- Ability to organize and coordinate work.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
- Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.
- Develops and adheres to Individualized Educational Plan, that outlines the necessary supports, accommodations and goals for an individual child.
- Meets with parents and staff regarding the plan and make necessary adjustments throughout the year.
- Work with children who can vary from mild to severe disabilities, using specialized techniques to help them reach their goals.
