About the Role

Bismarck Public Schools is accepting applications for Special Education Teachers beginning the 2026-2027 school year. These positions are responsible for providing direct, specially designed instruction to students in elementary or high school, including evaluation of students, writing IEPs, developing programming, collecting data, and reporting progress. The position starts August 14th, 2026, with new teacher orientation held August 11th, 12th, and 13th. The teaching contract is 187 days. External candidates may bring in up to 17 years of contracted K–12 teaching experience.

This posting is open to internal and external teaching applicants, including current BPS employees in support staff, temporary, or substitute positions. Current contracted part-time BPS teachers seeking a full-time position should also complete the external application. Applicants will be required to complete the EPI Candidate Assessment, a timed survey taking approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour. The survey only needs to be completed once and will apply to all applications.

Qualifications

  • Valid North Dakota teaching certificate
  • Bachelor’s degree

Responsibilities

Essential Functions

  • Communicates and interacts with students, parents, staff, and community.
  • Provides an atmosphere and environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development of children.
  • Develops, selects, and modifies instructional plans and materials to meet the needs of all students.
  • Plans and provides appropriate learning experiences for students.
  • Monitors and evaluates student outcomes.
  • Supervises students in a variety of school-related settings.
  • Maintains appropriate records and follows required procedures and practices.
  • Assesses student accomplishments regularly and provides progress reports as required.
  • Creates daily lesson plans detailed enough for a substitute teacher to effectively take over the class if necessary.

Non-Essential Functions

  • Strives to maintain and improve professional competence.
  • Monitors appropriate use and care of equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Meets and instructs assigned classes at designated times and locations.
  • Prepares for classes and provides written evidence of preparation upon request.
  • Assists administration in implementing policies and rules governing student life and conduct.
  • Develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and maintains order fairly.
  • Takes necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Attends and participates in faculty meetings.
  • Assists in the selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials.
  • Establishes and maintains cooperative relations with staff members.
  • Pursues professional growth through reading, workshops, seminars, conferences, or advanced coursework, complying with Bismarck Public Schools' professional growth program.
