Special Education Teacher for the Deaf/Hard of Hearing (D/HH) 2026-2027 School Year

About the role

The Akron Board of Education seeks a Special Education Teacher for the Deaf/Hard of Hearing (D/HH) position. The role involves helping students learn subject matter and/or skills that contribute to their development as mature, able, and responsible individuals. The teacher is expected to plan a program of study tailored to individual student needs, interests, and abilities, and to assess student progress regularly.

Responsibilities

• Creates a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate to students' maturity and interests.
• Employs instructional methods and materials most appropriate for meeting stated objectives.
• Affords counseling opportunities with colleagues, students, and/or parents on a regular basis.
• Maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner.
• Develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure.
• Develops and supervises assignments for teacher aides and/or volunteers.
• Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulations.
• Assists in the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
• Monitors student progress in accordance with the IEP.
• Reports to and carries out any other responsibilities as assigned by the building principal.

Requirements

• Valid Ohio Special Education Licensure in Hearing Impaired K-12 within 2 years of start date of the assignment, with Hearing Impaired (PK-12) added to your Ohio Intervention Specialist License.
• Evidence of proficient sign language skills in CASE (Conceptually Accurate Signed English).
• Evidence of successful teaching.
