Special Education Teacher - Elementary

Supports the instructional process by developing individualized plans for special education students that address academic achievement, interpersonal skills, and activities of daily living.

Responsibilities

• Administers developmental testing programs, district assessments, state tests, and other evaluations for the purpose of assessing student competency levels and developing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
• Administers, under supervision, first aid and assistance to medically fragile students (e.g., tube feeding, toileting, diapering, etc.) for the purpose of providing appropriate care as assigned.
• Advises parents and/or legal guardians regarding student progress for the purpose of communicating expectations, documenting student achievements, developing methods for improvement, and reinforcing classroom goals within the school environment.
• Assesses student progress toward objectives, expectations, and/or goals (e.g., behavioral, communication, academic, vocational, etc.) for the purpose of providing feedback to students, parents, and administration.
• Collaborates with classroom teachers for the purpose of supporting the implementation of established curriculum and/or individual student plans.
• Collaborates with professional learning communities, instructional staff, school personnel, parents, business partners, and community resources (e.g., OT, PT, SLP, etc.) for the purpose of improving student outcomes and achieving classroom objectives in support of the school improvement plan.
• Interacts consistently with students for the purpose of educating and supporting student learning.
• Counsels students for the purpose of improving performance and developing problem-solving skills and techniques.
• Demonstrates methods required to complete classroom and/or subject-specific assignments for the purpose of providing an effective instructional program that addresses individual student needs.
• Differentiates classroom instruction and assignments for the purpose of providing instructional materials that address individualized learning styles and needs.
• Directs para-professionals, volunteers, and/or student workers for the purpose of implementing an effective classroom program that addresses the needs of individual students.
• Instructs students for the purpose of improving academic achievement, interpersonal development, and daily living skills through a defined course of study.
• Maintains a variety of confidential and non-confidential manual and electronic files and records (e.g., IEPs, SEAS, etc.) for the purpose of providing current information and historical reference in accordance with established administrative guidelines and legal requirements.
• Manages student behavior for the purpose of maintaining a safe and productive learning environment.
• Participates in a variety of meetings (e.g., SAP, IEP, PLC, etc.) for the purpose of conveying and gathering information required to perform assigned responsibilities.
• Prepares a variety of written materials (e.g., IEPs, grades, testing schedules, lesson plans, attendance records, behavior plans, daily behavior charts, anecdotal records, etc.) for the purpose of documenting student progress and meeting mandated requirements.
• Reports incidents (e.g., fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining student safety, supporting a positive learning environment, and complying with education codes and school policies.
• Responds to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns and/or referring matters to appropriate personnel for resolution.
• Responds to inquiries from students, teachers, parents, administrators, and other stakeholders for the purpose of resolving issues, providing information, and/or offering direction.
• Schedules students with para-professionals and other school personnel for academic and/or therapeutic services (e.g., OT, PT, SLP, etc.) for the purpose of supporting achievement of IEP goals.
• Supervises students in a variety of educational settings (e.g., classrooms, playgrounds, field trips, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining a safe and positive learning environment.

Requirements

• Job related experience is required.
• Bachelor's degree in job related area required.
• Missouri State Teaching Certificate required.
• Must pass a pre-employment background check (criminal justice fingerprint/background clearance).
