About the role

The Special Education Teacher provides engaging and rigorous instruction to students with disabilities and other students who require targeted academic support. The teacher delivers direct instruction in foundational reading, mathematics, study skills, and other intervention courses while promoting inclusive practices and supporting student success in the general education setting.

Responsibilities

  • Provides specially designed instruction and targeted academic intervention to students with disabilities.
  • Teaches intervention courses such as Foundations of Reading, Foundations of Mathematics, Study Skills, and academic support classes.
  • Supports inclusive practices by collaborating with general education teachers and providing push-in and co-teaching support as needed.
  • Develops and implements accommodations and modifications to ensure students access grade-level curriculum.
  • Maintains professional competence through training and professional development.
  • Monitors student progress and uses data to adjust instruction.
  • Communicates regularly with parents and guardians regarding student progress.
  • Collaborates with counselors, administrators, related service providers, and other staff members.
  • Assists with special education processes, including progress reporting and implementation of IEP goals.
  • Supervises students during classroom and school activities throughout the workday.
  • Participates in faculty committees and sponsors student activities as assigned.
  • Works effectively with paraeducators and other staff members.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the administrator.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Education or a related field.
  • Valid Washington State Teaching Certificate with a Special Education endorsement.
  • Current First Aid/CPR certification.
  • No history of child abuse or neglect and drug or alcohol abuse.
  • Passes a fingerprint check in accordance with 25 CFR 63.
  • Passes a pre-employment background check.
  • Passes a pre-employment drug test.
  • Possess a Valid Washington State Driver's License with a clean driving record and the ability to obtain a Yakama Nation Driving Permit with Defensive Driving Course Certificate (to be updated every 2 years).

  • Ability to differentiate instruction to meet a wide range of student needs.

  • Ability to analyze assessment data and monitor student progress.
  • Ability to work with and relate to Native American students and serve as a positive role model.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships in a diverse, multicultural environment.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to integrate cultural competencies into instruction.
