Ulster BOCES provides programs for students ages five through twenty-one who are identified as needing specialized programs and/or supports according to their Individualized Education Program (IEP). Special Education programs are offered at Ulster BOCES sites in Port Ewen, NY and in leased classrooms in component school districts. Programs are available in Special Class configurations of 12:1:1, 8:1:1, 8:1:2, 6:1:2, and 4:1:2, staffed by a full-time Special Education teacher and one or two teaching assistants.

About the role

This is a full-time, 10-month position for the 2026-2027 school year. Experience working with elementary and/or secondary education students is preferred. Appropriate NYS certification and fingerprinting are required.

Responsibilities

  • Meets and instructs assigned classes in designated locations and times.
  • Plans a program of study consistent with the individualized education plan (IEP).
  • Maintains written lesson plans with clear objectives and communicates these to students.
  • Employs a variety of instructional techniques and media tailored to students' needs and capabilities.
  • Creates a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate to students' maturity and interests.
  • Takes precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Implements policies and rules governing student conduct; develops and maintains fair classroom behavior and procedures.
  • Encourages students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior.
  • Assesses student performance regularly and provides progress reports as required.
  • Administers and scores State Education Department assessments.
  • Cooperates with staff to address students' health, attitude, and learning problems.
  • Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law and district policy.
  • Makes provision for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside instructional hours.
  • Plans and coordinates assignments for teaching assistants, aides, and volunteers.
  • Coordinates with mainstream teachers when necessary.
  • Selects and requisitions books, instructional aids, and supplies.
  • Participates in curriculum and developmental programs as required.
  • Strives to maintain and improve professional competence.
  • Attends staff meetings and serves on committees as required.
  • Assumes other duties as assigned by the Supervisor.

Requirements

  • Valid NYS teaching certificate in Students with Disabilities (Birth-Grade 2, Grades 1-6, Grades 5-9, Grades 7-12, or Special Education K-12).
  • Initial or Professional Certificate required.
  • Fingerprinting required for legal employment.

Schedule

10-month schedule, September through June. Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 2:40 p.m.

Pay

Regionally competitive salary starting at $67,765 per year, commensurate with experience and training.
