Special Education Teacher

About the role

As the lead teacher in the classroom at Thresholds High School, an Illinois State Board of Education certified year-round therapeutic day school, you will educate a class of up to 8 students ages 16 to 21 with ongoing serious mental health needs. The school operates year-round, providing flexibility and support to help students achieve their high school diploma and transition goals. Students benefit from rich therapeutic supports addressing anxiety, frustration, school refusal, and other challenges that previously derailed their academic success.

Responsibilities

• Develop and implement a course of study according to curriculum guidelines of the school district and state requirements, tailored for three or more levels of academic ability and aligned with students’ IEPs.
• Supervise and instruct students daily with the assistance of a teacher’s aide.
• Monitor and grade student performance, supporting academic achievement, graduation, and preparation for next steps.
• Conduct standardized tests in accordance with district policies and state laws.
• Maintain records of academic performance, attendance, and social acclimation.
• Perform Therapeutic Crisis Intervention therapeutic restraint techniques, which require moderate exertion, the ability to lift 40 pounds, and the mobility to lower self to a kneeling position on the floor (training provided).

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Education or Special Education (required). Master’s degree preferred.
• Current Learning Behavior Specialist 1 (LBS1) license (required).
• Previous IEP writing experience (preferred).
• Previous experience working with high school-aged children dealing with mental illness.
• Passion for mental health advocacy, effective communication, and relationship-building skills.
• Patience, willingness to meet youth where they’re at, and strong writing skills with attention to detail.
