Special Education Teacher
Reports to: Principal and Director of Special Education
About the Role
In keeping with a tradition of excellence, the Special Education Teacher helps students learn subject matter and skills that contribute to their development as mature, able, and responsible individuals. The role involves developing and implementing each student's Individualized Education Program (IEP) through direct instruction and coordination with teachers at the local school.
Responsibilities
- Plan, develop, and implement students' Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
- Assist in implementing and ensuring completion of any related services outlined in the student's IEP.
- Meet and instruct assigned classes at designated times and locations.
- Plan a program of study tailored to the individual needs, interests, and abilities of students.
- Create a classroom environment conducive to learning, appropriate to student maturity and interests.
- Prepare for classes and provide written evidence of preparation upon request.
- Encourage students to maintain high standards of classroom behavior.
- Guide the learning process toward curriculum goals, establishing clear objectives for lessons, units, and projects.
- Use a variety of instructional techniques and media, aligned with student needs and capabilities.
- Implement the District's philosophy of education, instructional goals, and initiatives relevant to student age, grade, or placement.
- Regularly assess student accomplishments and provide progress reports as required by district and state policies.
- Take necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulation.
- Assist in implementing policies and rules governing student life and conduct; develop and enforce classroom behavior rules.
- Be available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside instructional hours when required.
- Plan and supervise assignments for teacher assistants as needed.
- Lead and attend staff meetings, trainings, and serve on staff committees.
- Assume responsibility for professional growth, staying current with literature, research, and maintaining licensure requirements.
- Maintain and ensure appropriate use of district-owned assets assigned to you.
- Undergo periodic evaluations according to state and board policies.
- Maintain confidentiality and ensure regular, dependable in-person attendance.
- Perform other duties as requested by the Board of Education, superintendent, or administrators.
- Read, understand, and abide by the Employee Conduct Policy, district, state, and federal policies, and the Mississippi Educator Code of Conduct.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Education.
- Hold an appropriate Mississippi Teaching Credential or valid emergency certification issued by the Mississippi Educational Board.

- Regularly required to talk or hear.
- Frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands for fine manipulation, handle or feel, and reach with hands and arms.
- Occasionally required to stoop, kneel, reach, crouch, or crawl.
- Must regularly lift and move up to 35 pounds and occasionally up to 75 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required include close vision.
Work Environment
The work environment encompasses the entire active school campus, both inside and outside facilities. Noise levels are usually low to moderate and occasionally high.
Pay
Salary, days, and work year as established by the Rankin County Board of Education.
