About the role
The Special Education teacher works under the direction of the school principal and/or assistant principal. Responsibilities include implementing research-based instructional strategies, developing a school and classroom culture conducive to learning, and serving students with various disabilities and gifted and talented needs.
Responsibilities
- Implement individualized instructional strategies based on students' learning styles, rates of learning, levels of maturation, and achievement levels.
- Vary materials, rates of instruction, and methodologies to meet the diverse needs of students.
- Maintain and update special education programs and files for each student, ensuring confidentiality.
- Follow federal and state laws and regulations regarding referrals, testing, program development, placement, child find activities, and paraprofessional training.
- Complete necessary paperwork in compliance with laws and regulations using a web-based system.
- Coordinate meetings and complete paperwork for diagnostic tests, new referrals, present placements, and behavioral incidents.
- Disseminate and communicate test results to staff, parents, etc., as appropriate.
- Plan and conduct ESER/IEP meetings to review special education referrals, assessments, and the Individual Education Plan/Placement process.
- Implement and collaborate on IEPs with regular education staff members and paraprofessionals for all inclusionary possibilities.
- Schedule and coordinate with related service providers as needed.
- Supervise and train special education teacher aides in providing services to students.
- Absorb and adhere to the code of ethics and professional teaching standards.
- Perform additional tasks and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in education required; Master's Degree preferred.
- Alaska Teacher Certificate with Special Education endorsement required.
- Three years' experience in education preferred.
- Inupiaq, Language, History & Culture experience preferred.
- Experience with students with intensive needs preferred.
- Experience with students with visual impairments and braille preferred.
Skills
- Ability to foster harmonious and cooperative interpersonal relationships with students, parents, supervisors, administrators, staff, and community members.
- Knowledge of local culture to provide bicultural or multicultural instruction.
- Proficiency in federal and state laws and regulations related to special education.
- Strong organizational and administrative skills.
- Effective communication and collaboration skills.
