Qualifications

  • Valid Mississippi Department of Education certification and licensure; transcripts must be on file with the Superintendent of Education.
  • Successful criminal background check and current child-abuse registry clearance as required by Mississippi Code §37-9-17.
  • Satisfactory employment record.

Job Goal

To work closely with students with disabilities on a regular basis in an effort to provide them with the physical and emotional support they need to gain the full benefits from the special education program.

Responsibilities

Instruction and Assessment

  • Deliver the instructional program in an organized and effective manner.
  • Provide quality work that engages students in learning.
  • Demonstrate subject-matter expertise and the ability to teach it effectively.
  • Recognize and respond appropriately to individual differences in students.
  • Differentiate instruction for a variety of developmental stages and ability levels.
  • Implement adopted curriculum, subject-matter standards, and assessment instruments to meet school and district goals.
  • Plan lessons in logical sequence.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the subjects to be taught and their relationship to other subjects.
  • Reflect on teaching and devise ways of improving performance on an ongoing basis.
  • Collaborate with other educators to create a complete educational environment for students.
  • Use a variety of assessment techniques/models to evaluate student performance continuously.
  • Use results of ongoing assessment to improve instruction.
  • Ensure all students meet adequate yearly progress as determined by local, state, and federal standards.
  • Participate in the referral-to-placement process for students being referred for Child Study.
  • Utilize technology in the teaching and learning process.

Classroom Management

  • Provide a physical environment that is safe, orderly, hazard-free, and conducive to learning.
  • Consistently implement approved disciplinary measures to allow for effective instruction and classroom management.
  • Attend yearly restraint training classes provided by the school district.
  • Be physically capable of restraining students in the event of a crisis situation.

Communication

  • Relate to parents and other community members in a positive and helpful fashion.
  • Write, speak, and present in a clear, concise, and well-planned manner.

Professional Development

  • Participate in self-initiated and school/district-initiated professional growth to maintain licensure and support school improvement efforts.

Policies and Procedures

  • Adhere to policies and procedures established by district, state, and federal guidelines.
  • Submit required paperwork efficiently, promptly, and accurately while meeting required deadlines.
  • Inventory classroom materials, textbooks, and equipment.

Other Duties

  • Accept responsibilities of co-curricular and extra-curricular duties as assigned by administration.
  • Participate in departmental/grade-level teams, school-level teams, and district-level committees as requested.
  • Attend school-related functions (e.g., PTA) outside the instructional day.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the administrator or Superintendent of Education.

Equipment

Uses standard office equipment such as personal computers, printer, copier, fax machines, calculator, and telephone.

Travel Requirements

Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

Physical and Mental Demands

Works in standard office and school building environments.

Schedule

187 days annually.
