SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER
About the role
The Special Education teacher at Bridgeport Learning Center is responsible for developing plans for students, managing the classroom environment, providing instruction, and assessing students' knowledge, needs, abilities, and progress. The teacher also plans and produces presentations showcasing student work, talent, and athletic skills. They develop and implement Individual Education Plans (IEPs), consult with necessary school personnel to provide appropriate modifications and accommodations, and maintain high expectations for student learning and behavior.
Responsibilities
- Demonstrates comprehensive and current knowledge of subject taught.
- Demonstrates knowledge of human growth and development as it relates to the learning/teaching process.
- Demonstrates an awareness and respect for diversity of cultural backgrounds and lifestyles.
- Identifies and sequences goals, objectives, strategies, and assessments, which provide for individual differences.
- Plans and implements the elements of an effective lesson design and develops lesson plans incorporating technology and instructional aids appropriate for instruction.
- Aligns assessment with instructional objectives on the basis of formative assessment.
- Maintains high expectations for student learning and behavior.
- Maintains a safe and orderly classroom environment by consistently implementing routines, transitions, and procedures.
- Communicates with students both individually and collectively about their needs and progress.
- Develops and maintains systems for keeping group and individual records.
- Establishes rapport and fosters positive reinforcement.
Qualifications
- Connecticut teaching certification (065) Comprehensive Special Education PK-12; master's degree preferred.
- Three years' successful teaching experience in an urban setting preferred.
- Experience in the use of educational technology.
- Demonstrates responsibility for self-growth, professional improvement, ongoing self-reflection or self-evaluation.
- Excellent oral and written communication and human relation skills.
Benefits
This position is in accordance with the Agreement between the Bridgeport Education Association (BEA) and the Bridgeport Board of Education. The salary will follow the contract and is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
