Special Education Teacher (7-12)

Under the general supervision of the School Principal, to maximize the learning experience of students with special needs in academics, interpersonal skills, and activities of daily living by implementing district-approved curriculum.

Qualifications

• State Certification as a Special Education Teacher
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in an education discipline applicable to teaching assignment
• Master’s Degree in Special Education
• Science teaching background knowledge at the secondary level preferred
• Successful prior special education teaching experience for the appropriate grade level preferred

Responsibilities

• Conduct assessments, testing, and diagnostic examinations of students to identify learning issues and recommend corrective procedures
• Participate in PPTs and assist in developing Individual Educational Plans (IEPs) for students
• Assist students and teaching staff in implementing students' IEPs and behavior management plans
• Coordinate with outside agencies, organizations, and institutions, including state and federal authorities as needed
• Coordinate with administrators and other teaching staff to ascertain individual student abilities and needs, including those with special needs
• Serve as a resource to students and parents, providing counseling to support personal growth, self-understanding, and behavioral management; act as a liaison between home and school
• Acquire professional knowledge and stay current with developments in the educational field through seminars, workshops, professional meetings, research, and collaboration with higher education and business communities
• Organize and maintain accurate record-keeping systems for student information, including data for colleges and employers, in compliance with district procedures and laws
• Encourage parental involvement in students' education and ensure effective communication with students and parents
• Assist in the orientation of new teachers and provide in-service training in guidance
• Select and requisition appropriate books, aids, supplies, and equipment; maintain inventory records
• Perform other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and central office administrators

Pay

$60,307 – $85,536 (BOCES Faculty Association contract)
