Special Education Self-Contained K-2 classrooms (NEW)

Locations: Elementary Schools – 8 new self-contained K-2 classroom positions (4 General Curriculum; 4 Adapted Curriculum). Supervisor: Building principal. Full-time, 10-month employment period.

About the role

Provides direct instructional services to students with disabilities in alignment with their Individual Education Programs (IEPs).

Responsibilities

• Assesses student abilities in relation to educational goals, objectives, outcomes, and disability or impairment.
• Collaborates with staff and parents to develop and implement Individual Education Programs (IEPs) for each assigned student.
• Participates in and/or chairs eligibility, IEP, and triennial meetings.
• Develops, adapts, and modifies educational materials, resources, and strategies to meet the needs of students with disabilities.
• Manages student behavior in instructional settings to ensure a conducive learning environment and assists with behavior management in other school areas.
• Coordinates educational activities with other professional staff, both school and non-school based, to maximize learning opportunities.
• Assesses student achievement continuously through formal and informal testing and maintains appropriate documentation for reporting.
• Utilizes instructional materials, multimedia, and technology to enhance learning.
• Collaborates with other professional staff on instructional activities.
• Participates in staff development activities and staff meetings as required.
• Communicates regularly with parents, both written and orally, to inform them of their children’s progress.
• Sets clear expectations for students and keeps them informed of their progress.
• Manages allotted learning time to maximize student achievement.
• Ensures the classroom and/or instructional environment is attractive, safe, healthful, and conducive to learning, with accessible materials.
• Conducts off-site visits as required to monitor students, confer with employers, or site instructors.
• Performs related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Must possess or be eligible for a teaching license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia with an endorsement in Special Education General Curriculum, or have completed a bachelor’s degree and additional coursework necessary to obtain a teaching license.
• Preference given to candidates who have completed an approved teacher preparation program.
• Must maintain licensure with the appropriate endorsement.
• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
• Excellent organizational, planning, and human relations skills.
• Good knowledge of the nature and effects of impairments and disabilities of assigned students.
• Good knowledge of procedures, practices, materials, and equipment required to provide appropriate learning experiences.
• Ability to assess needs, develop and implement an IEP, and evaluate outcomes.
• Ability to coordinate activities with other appropriate staff.
• Ability to develop and maintain required records and reports.

Pay

The annual salary for this position ranges from $58,500 (Step 0, Bachelor’s) to $101,105 (Step 30+, Doctorate) based on the approved 2026-2027 school year salary scale. Final salary placement is determined strictly by verified years of creditable experience.
