This recruitment is open to both new applicants and current employees (promotional candidates). Promotional candidates will receive seniority points added to final passing scores (.25 of a point for every year of classified service, up to a maximum of 5 points). The resulting eligibility list will be used to fill current and future vacancies and will remain active for one year or until canceled.

About the role

Under the supervision of a site administrator and daily direction of a credentialed teacher(s), you will provide instructional support and assistance to students receiving special education services. This includes performing instructional support activities related to behavior management and other related tasks. Positions may be assigned to work in a classroom environment or support a single student for any portion of the workday, as documented in the student’s Individual Education Plan (IEP).

There are currently multiple 30-hour-per-week, 10-month positions available at various school sites.

Requirements

  • Any combination of education, training, and experience equivalent to graduation from high school or equivalent, and extensive demonstrated (paid or volunteer) experience working with children.
  • Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) certification.
  • Valid certifications for First Aid, Adult/Child CPR, and AED provided by the American Heart Association, American Red Cross, or a District-approved provider.
  • Some positions may require a current, valid California driver’s license.

Knowledge

  • Principles and practices related to students receiving special education services.
  • Behaviors, issues, and concerns of students receiving special education services.
  • General subjects taught in District schools.
  • Safe practices in classroom and other activities.
  • Basic instructional methods and techniques.
  • Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary.
  • Oral and written communication skills.
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.
  • Basic record-keeping techniques.
  • Classroom procedures and appropriate student conduct.

Responsibilities

  • Provide instructional support and assistance to teachers and students receiving special education services.
  • Perform instructional support and behavior management activities for students receiving special education services.
  • Reinforce and support instruction to students with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs).
  • Learn and utilize methods and procedures to be followed in an instructional setting.
  • Assist with instruction and related activities in a classroom or assigned learning environment.
  • Understand, interpret, apply, and follow rules, regulations, standards, and procedures.
  • Perform clerical duties related to classroom activities.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Establish and maintain professional, cooperative, and effective working relationships with others.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Understand and work within scope of authority.
  • Work confidentially with discretion.
  • Communicate with diverse groups and individuals.

Schedule

  • 30 hours per week.
  • 10-month positions.
