Qualifications

Desired Documentation of at least 90 credit hours of approved study in an educationally related field.

Must hold or be eligible for State of Maine Educational Technician III Certification and CHRC Approval Certificate.

  • Strong communication, organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • An understanding of the instructional process and students' needs, including understanding of the student with special needs.
  • Knowledge of emergency, health, and safety issues (preferred).
  • Willingness to participate in ongoing in-service training as requested by Administrator and/or Director.
  • Maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students as required by law.
  • Demonstrated aptitude or competence for successful fulfillment of assigned performance responsibilities (prior experience in the educational field is desirable but not required).

Job Goal

To assist the teaching staff in maintaining appropriate classroom activities/environment in which students can take full advantage of the instructional program and available resource materials.

Performance Responsibilities

  • Perform instructional tasks including, but not limited to:
    • Work with individual students or small groups of students to review and reinforce learning previously introduced by classroom teacher/content specialist.
    • Introduce new learning preplanned in consultation with the classroom teacher/content specialist.
    • Aid the teacher/content specialist in devising special strategies for reinforcing material or skills based on an understanding of individual students' needs, interests, and abilities.
    • Guide independent study, enrichment work, and/or remedial work set up and assigned by the teacher/content specialist.
    • Coach students with functional needs.
    • Collect and maintain data in accordance with student plans.
    • Supervise small groups of students in community-based programs.
  • Perform non-instructional, non-evaluative functions:
    • Administer, score and record such achievement/diagnostic tests as the teacher/content specialist recommends for individual students.
    • Help students master equipment/instructional materials assigned by the teacher/content specialist.
    • Provide input, if requested, to the IEP process.
    • Aid in preparation of instructional materials including: Copying, typing, filing, cutting, laminating, bulletin board preparation, classroom calendar, bulletin board preparation.
    • Aid the teacher/content specialist with management functions including: Assisting with playground/recess, bus, study hall, detention and lunch duties as assigned.
    • Aid in supervision of students during emergency/fire drills, assemblies, field trips, provide escort and assistance services to children as necessary, etc.
  • Participate in ongoing in-service training in the specialty area of employment.

Terms of Employment

  • Salary, work year and working conditions to be established by the RSU 57 School Board.

Evaluation

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the School Board's policy on evaluation.

Physical Demands

  • Frequent: Sitting, standing, walking, and climbing stairs.
  • Physical Tasks: Bending, pulling, pushing, kneeling, and crouching.
  • Lifting: Ability to lift ranging from 25–75 lbs depending on student size and situational needs.
