Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Maintains or is eligible for State of Maine Educational Technician I Certification and CHRC Approval Certificate.
- Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- An understanding of the instructional process and students' needs, including special needs.
- Knowledge of emergency, health, and safety issues (preferred).
- Willingness to participate in ongoing in-service training as requested.
- Demonstrated aptitude or competence for successful fulfillment of assigned performance responsibilities.
- Prior experience in the educational field desirable but not required.
Job Goal
To assist the teaching staff in maintaining appropriate classroom activities and environments where students can fully utilize the instructional program and available resources.
Performance Responsibilities
- Perform instructional tasks, including reviewing and reinforcing learning with individual students or small groups under the direct supervision of a teacher/content specialist.
- Devise special strategies for reinforcing material or skills based on individual students' needs, interests, and abilities.
- Guide independent study, enrichment work, and remedial work set up and assigned by the teacher/content specialist.
- Coach students with functional needs.
- Collect and maintain data in accordance with student plans.
- Perform non-instructional, non-evaluative functions, such as administering, scoring, and recording achievement/diagnostic tests.
- Help students master equipment/instructional materials assigned by the teacher/content specialist.
- Provide input to the IEP process as requested.
- Aid in the preparation of instructional materials, including copying, typing, filing, cutting, laminating, bulletin board preparation, classroom calendar, and bulletin board preparation.
- Assist the teacher/content specialist with management functions, such as assisting with playground/recess, bus, study hall, detention, and lunch duties as assigned.
- Assist with supervision of students during emergency/fire drills, assemblies, field trips, providing escort and assistance services to children as necessary, etc.
- Participate in ongoing in-service training in the specialty area of employment.
Terms of Employment
- Salary, work year, and working conditions to be established by the RSU 57 School Board.
Evaluation
Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the School Board's policy on evaluation.
Physical Demands
- Frequent: Sitting, standing, walking, and climbing stairs.
- Physical Tasks: Bending, pulling, pushing, kneeling, and crouching.
- Lifting: Ability to lift ranging from 25–75 lbs depending on student size and situational needs.
