Special Education Classroom Teacher - High School

The Vanguard School, founded in 1959 and located on a beautiful 28-acre campus in Malvern, PA, is dedicated to the growth and development of children and young adults with a variety of special needs through a collaborative and holistic approach.

About the role

As a Classroom Teacher, you will work closely with students and staff in a 10-month, full-time position (Monday to Friday, 7:45 AM to 3:30 PM) to foster an environment driven by respect, appreciation, learning, and growth.

Responsibilities

• Plan and implement daily academic and behavioral lessons for assigned students.
• Maintain accurate records of student progress and provide reporting as required.
• Develop and document instructional lessons addressing individual student goals.
• Implement behavioral programs, define expectations, and encourage self-discipline.
• Supervise students at all times, including instructional periods, homeroom, clubs, lunch, playground, transportation, and trips.
• Deliver goal-related instruction with clear expectations, equitable participation, differentiation, and assessment.
• Maintain detailed records for each student, including starting points, strengths, deficiencies, objectives, and progress evaluations.
• Correlate instruction with other subject areas and specialists (e.g., psychologists, therapists, nurses).
• Conduct parent-teacher conferences professionally and as scheduled.
• Assign and manage instructional materials, ensuring proper care and return.
• Maintain classroom appearance and conduct end-of-year inventory.
• Assist with budgeting, program goals, and material orders in collaboration with supervisors.

• Comply with all organizational policies and procedures.
• Maintain professional, confidential, and ethical relationships with all constituents.
• Attend and participate in staff meetings, in-service activities, and required trainings.
• Stay informed on PDE regulations, state/national standards, and related professional development.
• Perform related duties, special assignments, and projects as assigned.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Special Education, Elementary Education, or a related field.
• Current, valid Pennsylvania certification appropriate for the assignment.
• Exposure to and participation in special education programming.
• Ability to recognize and respect the individuality and uniqueness of each student.
• Strong engagement in all components of the educational process, both intellectually and physically.
• Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with administrators, colleagues, students, parents, and others.
• Proficiency in correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary.
• Proficient computer and clerical skills.
