About the role

The Wauwatosa School District (WSD) is seeking candidates interested in serving as a Special Educational Assistant at Jefferson Elementary School. Jefferson serves approximately 220 students.

Responsibilities

  • Provides support and delivers services to students with disabilities throughout the school day to ensure academic growth, positive social engagement, and access to the school environment
  • Assists students with academic work in general education classrooms and small group settings
  • Under the supervision of assigned teacher, implements instructional programs and lesson plans for the purpose of presenting and/or reinforcing learning concepts
  • Provides physical assistance to students with mobility challenges
  • Works collaboratively with special education team
  • Delivers direct instructional services, academic supports, and behavioral supports described in IEP’s of students with disabilities
  • Aids classroom teacher in performing specific duties as assigned or undertaking specialized tasks to support academic and social success of students
  • Adapts classroom activities, assignments, and materials under the direction of the supervising teacher to support and reinforce academic and behavioral goals
  • Serves as role model for students in how to conduct themselves as citizens and as responsible, intelligent human beings
  • Complies with the following requirement: The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substance in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the District
  • Performs other duties as may be assigned

Requirements

  • High school diploma
  • Certification or the ability to gain certification as a special education aide through the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction
  • Teaching certification through the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (preferred)
  • Ability to read, comprehend, follow, and give oral and written instructions
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Experience with the needs of a diverse student population (preferred)
  • Experience working with students with disabilities (preferred)
  • Academic support experience in the classroom (preferred)
