About the role
Performs a variety of responsible and specialized tasks in the physical care and classroom instruction of students with disabilities; and assists students with disabilities in meeting the physical requirements of attending school.
Responsibilities
- Assists students upon arrival and departure at school and throughout the school day by repositioning in wheelchairs or other necessary appliances.
- Assists students with washing, feeding, toileting, and other personal care needs.
- Performs specialized physical health care services such as, suctioning, gastrostomy tube feeding, catheterization, oxygen administration and care of related equipment, and administers medication as directed.
- Provides basic emergency care as needed, including cardio pulmonary resuscitation or other life sustaining efforts until medical assistance arrives.
- Changes sheets and linens and prepares cots and beds for rest periods.
- Completes written accident or incident reports as needed.
- Communicates students' needs to the teacher.
- Cleans and maintains activity rooms, equipment, and utensils.
- Supervises students in physical and instructional activities providing assistance as directed by a teacher.
- Observes and reports on students' progress.
- Performs a variety of office clerical tasks such as typing and preparing dittos and stencils.
- Aids in administering, scoring, and maintaining records or tests.
- Performs related work as required.
Requirements
- Graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent.
- Licenses/Certificates: Incumbents must obtain a valid First Aid and CPR certificate within the designated probationary period for this classification.
Qualifications
- One year of experience working with handicapped individuals.
- Written and oral proficiency in a second language (desirable).
Skills
- Knowledge of personal needs and behavioral characteristics of students with disabilities.
- Special education materials, practices, concepts, and techniques.
- Record keeping principles and procedures.
- Classroom procedures and rules of conduct.
- Basic emergency, first aid, and health care techniques.
- Clerical practices and procedures.
Benefits
- Salary: Positions in this classification start at the fourth step of the salary range at $20.52 per hour.
- Substitute employees are paid a fixed hourly rate at the fourth step.
- Potential for higher rates upon successful completion of the probationary period (130 days of paid service) and may receive merit increases each year up to the maximum amount.
Pay
- Starting at the fourth step of the salary range at $20.52 per hour.
Schedule
- Part-time, 9.25 months per year, 6 hours per day.
- Permanent positions are Monday through Friday and include full benefits for the employee only.
- Both permanent and substitute assignments may be in any part of the district boundaries (Glendale, La Crescenta, or Montrose).
