Purpose

Provide support to identified students with disabilities who require additional support and supervision throughout the school day.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Valid Texas Educational Aide Certificate
  • PAC Test (No Child Left Behind) / 48 College Hours
  • Bilingual Test (if applicable)

Special Knowledge & Skills

  • Ability to work with children who exhibit severe behavior challenges
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
  • Effective communication skills
  • Ability to drive a motor vehicle, read a map, and navigate an automobile
  • Basic computer and typing skills
  • Time management and organizational skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to maintain a schedule

Experience

Previous work experience with behavioral children.

Responsibilities

  • Assist teacher in routine classroom management duties
  • Prepare instructional materials and maintain classroom environment and supplies
  • Assist students in homework preparation and test taking
  • Modify teacher’s assignments, tests, and other instructional materials
  • Maintain records, files, and pertinent documents on each student
  • Communicate students’ needs to faculty and staff
  • Maintain a safe environment for students, faculty, and staff
  • Implement student’s behavior management plan
  • Assist in the loading and unloading of school buses
  • Participate in physical education activities
  • Assist with individual student’s personal hygiene needs, including feeding
  • Lift, move, and position students in various settings
  • Be aware of and respond to students’ medical concerns
  • Escort students to different locations in the building
  • Monitor students during various activities throughout the school day
  • File documents in students’ folders
  • Orient students to class schedules each semester
  • Obtain necessary textbooks for different programs
  • Perform other duties as determined by the special education teacher or principal

Physical Demands & Environmental Factors

  • Frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing, and pulling
  • Regular heavy lifting of students, equipment, and materials
  • Biological exposure to bacteria and communicable diseases
