About the role

The Special Education Teacher position is responsible for teaching basic social, academic, and home living related skills to students in schools and centers. They collaborate with staff and parents to develop Individual Education Programs (IEPs) and Functional Behavioral Assessments (FBAs) as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in eligibility process and in-take process after student is determined eligible for special education programs.
  • Affirms student abilities as related to educational goals, objectives, and outcomes, considering disabilities or impairments.
  • Collaborates with staff and parents to develop IEPs and FBAs.
  • Plans appropriate instructional/learning strategies and activities, including determining appropriate materials and equipment.
  • Implements an instructional, therapeutic, or skill development program.
  • Manages the behavior of learners in instructional settings to ensure a conducive learning environment.
  • Coordinates educational activities with other professionals, both school and non-school based, to maximize learning opportunities.
  • Continually assesses student achievement through formal and informal testing, maintaining appropriate assessment and evaluation documentation.
  • Utilizes a variety of instructional materials and multimedia technology to enhance learning.
  • Works in self-contained, team, departmental, or itinerant capacities as assigned.
  • Participates in inservices and staff development activities and staff meetings as required or assigned.
  • Continually learns about technology, programming, and information related to the field of education and special education.
  • Maintains confidentiality of information in accordance with HIPAA, FERPA, and IDEA regulations.
  • Communicates with all school personnel regarding students' IEPs, monitoring and reporting progress.
  • Communicates with students on expectations and keeps them informed of their progress in meeting those expectations as appropriate.
  • Manages allotted learning time to maximize student achievement.
  • Sets up and maintains a classroom or instructional environment that is attractive, healthy, safe, and conducive to learning, and ensures materials are accessible to students.
  • Provides or supervises care and feeding of students who need assistance with feeding and self-care, including tube feeding.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or his/her designee.

Qualifications

  • Possession of a current Pennsylvania Teaching Certificate.
  • Valid PA Driver's License.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common professional and technical journals, governmental regulations, and legal documents.
  • Ability to respond to inquiries from staff and regulatory agencies.
  • Ability to write reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from administration, students, and parents.
  • Ability to work mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions for practical situations.
  • Ability to interpret and present mathematical curriculum to students.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to develop and maintain required records and reports.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, parents, and the community.
  • Ability to work as a team member.
