Schedule and Shift
Monday - Friday, 9AM - 5:30PM
Based at Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, Utah.
About the Role
Coordinates and delivers both interpretation (oral) and translation (written) services for individuals with limited English proficiency across all Intermountain Health facilities and virtual services.
Responsibilities
- Interprets medical and general information with the highest degree of accuracy and completeness in consecutive, simultaneous and sight translation modes for patients, families, and Intermountain Health staff, using appropriate communication methods according to the individual’s developmental age and mental condition.
- Interprets complex medical information, demonstrating expert knowledge of medical terminology and the healthcare system.
- Acts as a cultural mediator, demonstrating cultural sensitivity and superior intercultural communication skills.
- Renders unbiased interpretation to ensure accurate exchange of information in the proper cultural context.
- Adheres to the National Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice for Healthcare Interpreters, demonstrating knowledge of HIPAA, Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act, and Section 1557 of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.
- Manages time productively, displaying a proactive approach to the job. Responds to requests in a timely manner and provides staff with an estimated time of arrival for interpretation assignments. Refers staff to phone or video interpretation per guidelines.
- Uses computer, software, and electronic tools for research, data entry and other communication purposes within the work environment. Maintains accurate and complete records of all interpretation events. Ensures data across multiple platforms or sources is consistent and accurate.
- Translates written material into one of more languages, ensuring meaning, context, and localization are maintained. Completes assignments in a timely manner and with a high degree of accuracy.
- Acts as a liaison between Language Services leadership and assigned units and clinics, managing relations and with department managers and other leaders to assess needs and provide support and education.
- Encourages open and flexible communication with coworkers, hospital personnel and physicians to create a positive team environment and seamless service delivery.
- Trains and mentors interpreters and assist in the process of identifying, testing and training qualified bilingual staff. Assesses staff and supplier’s performance to ensure quality and adherence to Intermountain Policies and Procedures.
- Under the supervision of the department manager, collaborates with patient experience, compliance and other departments to research and report on safety and compliance events.
Requirements
Successful completion of a pre-hire skills assessment.
Excellent oral and written command of both source and target language(s), as to reach an “Advances Professional Performance” or Level 4 in the ILR scale (or equivalent as approved by Manager), including specialized healthcare terminology.
Demonstrate the ability to work effectively in a fast paced, high-pressure environment.
Demonstrate ability to prioritize and multi-task.
Demonstrate interpersonal verbal and written communication skills to function as part of a team and the flexibility and good judgement to work independently.
Active national certification as a Healthcare or Medical Interpreter from either the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI) or the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters (NBCMI) is required.

Pay
The hourly range for this position is listed below. Actual hourly rate dependent upon experience.
$25.39 - $40.00
